Help us to support Charlie Bear and his Mum.
On 28 April 2017, my 2 year old nephew Charlie was diagnosed with Wilms Kidney Cancer. To get through this terrible time, Charlie and his mum need your support.
It all started one afternoon when Charlie was just playing with Lily, his 5 year old sister, in the lounge room when Charlie suddenly fainted and fell to the ground. Looking pale and losing consciousness, no one knew what was wrong with Charlie. His distraught Mum called an ambulance. The ambulance rushed Charlie to the Women's and Children's Hospital.
The doctors examined Charlie and took him in for an X-ray and CT scan to determine the cause of his illness. The doctors had the results. The results were every parent's worse nightmare.
The doctors informed Charlie's mum that the cause of Charlie's illness was a tumor located on one of his kidneys. They told her that to help Charlie, they needed to remove his kidney straight away. Further tests showed that the tumor had burst causing cancer cells to spread throughout his body, elevating the cancer from Stage I to Stage III.
Charlie's mum and his family have been absolutely devastated by this awful news. No child should have to suffer from this horrible disease.
Charlie was taken into surgery without delay. Charlie's kidney was removed. The positive news is that the surgeons were able to remove all of the tumor in the process.
However, the cancer cells had already spread beyond Charlie's kidney. Charlie had to undergo both radiation therapy and chemotherapy in an attempt to eliminate the remaining cancer cells in his body.
Just near the end of Charlie’s first cycle of chemotherapy, when all was looking positive, further test results revealed that a lump had appeared on one of Charlie’s lungs. At the moment, it is not known exactly what this lump is, but doctors have told Charlie’s Mum to prepare for the worst. Charlie will have to undergo further surgery shortly to determine the nature of the lump.
Whatever happens, Charlie will need to undergo further intensive chemotherapy treatment. As everyone knows, chemotherapy treatment can itself produce some very awful side effects. The fight is not over yet.
Charlie's mum is Charlie's primary care giver. In order to provide the care and support that Charlie will need during his treatment over the next 6 months, Charlie's mum has had no alternative but to take unpaid leave from her work. She has no paid leave left, she is a sole parent and has no alternative source of income. But like every parent, she still has a mortgage and other household bills to pay. Charlie's mum is frightened of losing the family home if she cannot pay her mortgage payments, as she is not able to go to work.
I want to do everything I can to support my nephew Charlie and his mum during this time. I don't want Charlie’s mum to have to worry about the household bills and mortgage payments. She is already stressed out enough about Charlie’s condition.
Please join me in helping Charlie and his mum with whatever you can afford, no matter how small, the result will be life changing for Charlie and his mum. Together we can do something to ensure that Charlie's mum can take care of Charlie Bear during his treatment free from the burden of financial stress.
