Our mom, Mary Kay, had a stroke on March 17th. She had a hemorrhage on the left side of her brain, which impacts her speech and her mobility on the right side of her body.
Mary Kay moved from the hospital to a residential rehab facility on March 21st, and at the moment we expect her to be there for 2-3 weeks. After rehab she will move home, and Luisa will stay with her through her recovery (with lots of help from George and her incredible family and network of friends).
Mary Kay is making small improvements, but she has a long road ahead. We are trying to keep her spirits up, but she is very frustrated at the moment.
If you know Mary Kay, you know that she is extremely active and independent. You know that she is strong and determined. And, you know that when she is not swimming or working her tail off, she is constantly looking for ways to help others. I'm sure many of you have experienced her kindness and generosity.
We are already overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support for Mary Kay. Many of you have contacted us to ask how you can help, and we have a couple of options for you:
1. Donate to Mary Kay's GoFundMe page to help with her medical expenses. No donation is too small.
2. Perform an act of kindness and send Mary Kay a note and tell her about the act you did in her honor--she loves postcards. For example, you could: bring a hot meal to someone you know who is lonely or sick; feed the birds; visit someone you know in prison; buy coffee for the person behind you in line at Starbucks; etc.
3. Bring dinner to Mary Kay and Luisa when Mary Kay is out of rehab. Mary Kay LOVES good food. You can sign-up here.
4. Visit Mary Kay at her home when she is out of rehab. Drink tea with her in her sunroom and watch the birds. You can sign-up here .
