Care For Keira

Donation protected
Our daughter Keira was born with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV). It’s a common virus but if contracted while pregnant can be harmful to the unborn baby. In Keira’s case, she was born with sections of her brain that had not formed due to calcifications as well as numerous cysts all over her brain.

Keira is about to turn 3 and is profoundly deaf, has Global Development Delay, Non Verbal Autism Level 3, Amplyopia, Strabismus and Vision Impairment and is still unable to walk unaided.

Keira’s current therapies and specialists consist of Physiotherapy, Hydrotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, specialised Speech Therapy for food, Ophthalmologist, Ear Nose And Throat Specialist, Paediatrician, Advisory Visiting Teacher, Early Childhood Development Program, Vision Australia and Audiology.

Keira also has a severe aversion to textured food. At near 3 years of age, Keira is still on purée. We make all her food ourselves and attend a unique speech therapy and occupational therapy that concentrate on teaching Keira that food is fun and how to be able to feed herself and tolerate finger food.

We have decided to start this Go Fund Me account to help raise the funds to cover the costs of hydrotherapy both at home and in the community. This will allow Keira access to Hydrotherapy all year round. Keira absolutely loves the pool and in recent weeks has actually walked unaided in a community kids shallow pool.

Benefits of hydrotherapy are that the water’s buoyancy allows freedom of movement that is ideal for individuals who have restricted mobility due to weakness. Increased muscular strength occurs quicker as movements are performed against the resistance of the water. This combination of freedom and resistance is very difficult to duplicate in any land-based therapy environment.
Wave action can be utilized to challenge and strengthen core muscles and balance mechanisms. Off-balance falls are slowed due to the water resistance, which helps with protective response training. The patient’s fear of falling is decreased thereby improving trial effort resulting in greater progress per session.

With Hydrotherapy as well as her Physiotherapy and OT, we are all looking forward to that day where she can walk unaided and with that beautiful smile on her face.

With CMV, the effects are always unknown until the child does or doesn’t hit a milestone. So everything is a waiting game.

Will Keira walk?
Will Keira talk?
Will Keira go to school?
Will Keira be able to interact with her friends?

Everything is unknown. But everyday is a blessing. We are just grateful Keira is a happy little girl that has a beautiful smile and a laugh that would melt your heart. Everything else, we will work out in Keira Time ❣️
