Care and treatment for Oreo

Donation protected

Monday, October 19 Oreo was listless and favoring her left side. She was sort of not lifting her right rear paw much, causing it to drag. She was also clenching her right front paw. So, Keith and I had to make arrangements for Oreo to get to the vet as an emergency visit. Since we were both COVID+ we couldn’t take her ourselves, so my mom took her.

Our vet did some x-rays and blood work and suggested that maybe she has FCE (fibrocartilaginous embolus) which typically occurs in large breed dogs and is rare in cats, but does happen. It’s basically a spinal stroke. The only way to determine that for sure is a visit to a neurologist.

She came home with gabapentin (a pain med) and prednisolone (steroid) and a $975 bill, which has been paid.

I was finally able to get an appointment for her with Hope Veterinary Specialists in Malvern to see Dr. Brewer, their neurologist for Wednesday, October 28.

It has been determined that Oreo needs to have an MRI of her neck and brain to see if what’s going on is neurological. It could be FCE or a tumor/cancer. Also a spinal fluid check if necessary.
Estimated costs $2700-3500.

If something were to go wrong while under anesthesia we had to give the ok for them to perform closed chest CPR or open chest CPR. I said closed. Which gives another estimate of $200-500 for the CPR and $2000-3000 for CPR aftercare.

So we are looking at a possible $8,000 by the end of today. All monies due at the time of service. Not sure where I’m going bleed all of this money, but if you know me, you know Oreo is my life and I will do anything for her. She’s not in pain. I have had her since she was 6-7 weeks old and bottle fed her. She is 13 1/2 years old now (70 years human).
