A CAR FOR KHATERA

A year ago, my friend Khatera came to the United States to settle and find a home after years of living as a refugee in Pakistan and Turkey. Khatera came with her elderly mother and father, her sister-in-law, and her 6-and-8-year-old niece and nephew.

Now, they are settled in northern Virginia and Khatera and her family desperately need a car to get a job that will allow her to support her family of 6. She is the only member of the family with language skills to get a job here in Virginia and is currently working a minimum-wage job at a local grocery store. This year, Khatera studied hard and earned a translation certificate, but local translator jobs are not accessible to her without a car. Even worse, her mother was just diagnosed with cancer. A car would allow them to avoid spending precious funds on taxis and Ubers for her many upcoming medical appointments.

Khatera's a go-getter, and this lack of transportation is now the main thing standing in her way. She works so hard, speaks six languages(!) and wants to get a degree in business. But for now, she’s walking 80 minutes just to go to her bank. If you can help pitch in, please do! It will go a LONG way to improving life for this refugee family.

Our goal is to find an inexpensive but reliable car in the $3000-$5000 range and to be able to pay for her license and registration, insurance, and expected vehicle maintenance for at least one full year. Any extra funds will be spent on gas cards and to pay for the family’s utilities (They are going without AC this summer to save money!).
