"On Friday morning (January 12th), Miao Li's father was killed, and his mother and his pregnant wife were critically injured in a car accident. The car driven by his wife, Haifeng, was struck on the icy freeway by a Freightliner truck, throwing them into a ditch. It had rained the day before, and temperatures had dropped well below freezing during the night creating very difficult driving conditions."
Jucai Li, 63-year-old father from Henan, China, died at the scene. His wife Qinglian Li, 62-year-old mother also from Henan, received life-threatening head injuries and was airlifted to a Chicago hospital. Currently, Qinglian remains in critical condition in ICU, and her prognosis is uncertain. Haifeng also received life-threatening head injuries; Haifeng's 2-year-old son, Nathen, was in the car and was securely fastened in a child seat, but he showed signs of head injury. Both Haifeng and Nathen were placed in ICU in Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana. At this moment, both mom and the son are in stable condition in the hospital. The 16-week-old baby that Haifeng is carrying appears to be OK at present.
Miao and Haifeng have three children currently and the baby in utero. Miao received his Ph.D. from Purdue University and works as a post-doctorate researcher in Department of Sociology at University of Notre Dame and Haifeng is a full-time mom. It was a tragic accident that happened to a beautiful family.
As friends, we are appealing to all friends and family to send whatever you can to support this family in their time of crisis. There are many areas that the family needs support with, such as a funeral, significant hospital care, and associated medical retreatments, and rehabilitation and physical therapies. "
