Soccer's biggest stage is now in Dallas. The Latino communities of North Texas are helping to power the innovation, service, and hospitality to receive and welcome the world. And the Latino journalists of DFW are contributing to the stories that will be shared the world over.
This research project gives Latino storytellers — who have long lent their voice to reporting the news — the platform to tell their own stories. Your support today launches a platform for Latino journalists to share their professional experiences and inform future generations of rising journalists.
By the Numbers: Understanding the Impact and Progress of Latino Journalists in North Texas is an independently designed peer-to-peer research project documenting the professional experience, career trajectory, and industry outlook of Latino journalists in DFW. Little to no comparable workforce data currently exists on the journalists who have covered this market. Built on a comprehensive survey tool reviewed to meet academic guidelines and a structured data privacy framework, this is a pilot study with a methodology designed for replication in other markets.
I am Magda Salazar — former journalist, strategic communications professional, and for close to twelve years a volunteer leader with Hispanic Communicators DFW, including a two-year presidency during which the chapter earned national recognition. My career across financial communications, product development, public health, and nonprofit leadership built one foundation — earning community trust. My years with HCDFW made one thing clear: without a platform to capture the broad experience of this community's storytellers and a dedicated advocate, their stories would get lost. I designed the missing platform to capture their lived versions, wrote the abstract, and partnered with an academic institution. Late-stage changes in the partnership created an unexpected funding gap. Rather than wait, I made the decision to launch independently. This project has been three years in the making. It is ready.
I want to work with researchers, journalists, and community organizations in other markets to ensure that Latino journalists everywhere have an opportunity to share their experiences and be counted. This is the seed project to launch the effort.
My goal is $26,000 to include event- and travel-related fees to a national industry conference for three people (including two student ambassadors), the survey platform, digital tools, and app development for the student ambassador program. The conference is toward the end of July. Contributors will be acknowledged on the project website by name, organization, or anonymously — your choice. If you cannot contribute, sharing this with one person in your network is just as valuable.
