Mid-September of this year, retired Fire Captain Mark Mack had a surgical operation at Enloe Hospital in Chico, CA. Although the surgery went well, the tissue that was removed was sent to a lab for testing. The pathology lab found evidence of cancer in his pelvic area, specifically in the colon/rectal area.
The surgeon immediately had Mark undergo a series of blood tests and a CT scan. They even sent Mark to UC San Francisco for another opinion. What the oncologist and radiologist suspect is that is a rare form of cancer. The radiologist told Mark and his wife Ann that he was afraid that the cancer was small and hard to detect and that it could get into the lymph nodes.
The oncology/radiology/surgical doctors are recommending Chemo therapy - broad based radiation and then possible surgery to remove the whole area. They have told him that the success rate is only at 30% and there is no guarantee that the cancer will not reappear.
Through a close friend, Mark and Ann have learned of a clinic in Spain that has a 90% success rate in treating cancer with Dr. Raymond Hilu. Their friend was diagnosed in 2012 and given a year to live. Their friend went to this clinic as part of her treatment and in ninety days was declared cancer free.
The cost of the clinic is expensive with the addition of travel, lodging, meals and follow up treatments. The health insurance that Mark has will not cover the cost. Mark has spent most of his life serving and helping others. He spent over 30 years as a firefighter placing himself in harms way to protect other people from all types of disasters and incidents.
We are in need of funds to support his treatments in Spain. Knowing that upon our return, Mark may continue being a mentor, father, husband, and grandfather to those around him that need him so desperately. We appreciate only words of encouragement, blessings and love during this time. As many of you have given such kind words through text and conversation already, we appreciate you, and those who have felt called to bless us financially during this difficult season in our lives.
