Cape's New Outdoor Ice Rink - Project Plan

Donation protected
1/19/21 :

We have reached our Phase 1 Goal of $25,000 and can’t thank you enough!!
As noted on our Facebook page, most of Phase 1 is complete, and we are confident the $25,000 raised to date will get us through the 20-21 season successfully.  Your contributions have helped and will help us pay for this season’s site work, rink materials, maintenance (if spend is needed), set-up of our nonprofit (Cape Community Ice Rink), and filing for 501(c)(3) status to enable future donations to be tax deductible.

To make sure we protect Phase 1 from any unforeseen spend and get ahead of next winter (given the proposed scale of Phase 2, could cost >$1MM), we are continuing to accept donations, and as such, have increased our project goal by an additional $25,000.  Phase 2 items to be covered by these additional funds will be feasibility focused: site selection, project specifications and design work, pre-permitting activities, etc.

We truly appreciate your patience as we complete Phase 1 (adding backstop netting, goals, additional matting, etc.) and work to make the ice more fully available over a sustained period of time.  Mother Nature should FINALLY be cooperating later this week for a good stretch – we look forward to seeing you on the ice over the next couple of months!!

Greetings,

We are parents, coaches, and members of the Cape Elizabeth community.  Our town has so much to offer those who love the outdoors -- it truly is an amazing place to live.  This pandemic has forced us to get as creative as possible outside, further magnifying something we believe many Cape residents have always wanted: a reliable, community-scale, outdoor ice-skating surface for ALL types of skaters (not just hockey!).  The project organizers have already invested $6,000 in materials and would love additional support to make this vision a reality!

To ensure we deliver the community something THIS WINTER, we have broken the project into two Phases.  The Town of Cape Elizabeth has approved Phase 1 and is supportive of Phase 2, with Phase 1 serving as a demonstration for both the Town and its residents.

Phase 1 (this winter) will be located behind Town Hall and include a short-term, large, unrefrigerated ice sheet, equipped with lighting, goals, backstop netting, a perimeter barrier, rink-care equipment, and a place for people to tie skates / move to and from the rink.  Initial dollars raised will go toward the purchase, install (includes land prep), and maintenance of these items, as well as any start-up legal / admin needed.  Our Phase 1 fundraising goal is $25,000.

Phase 2 (next winter) is the grander long-term vision.  Our Phase 2 fundraising goal will be much larger. Location has yet to be decided, yet unused land at Gull Crest is being considered.  Our intent is to repurpose as much of Phase 1 as possible for Phase 2.  The initial Phase 2 plan will include a large, REFRIGERATED ice sheet, equipped with most items above, boards and glass, hockey benches, a warming hut, bathrooms, a roof, and a zamboni.  Other features can be added over time.

Tune in to our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/CEIceRink) to remain informed of project updates and schedules.  At this time, Phase 1 contributions will not be tax-deductible, yet we are actively working on the right mechanism to accept tax-deductible donations for Phase 2.

We expect to break ground on Phase 1 over the Holidays, yet can’t reach completion and keep it going without your help.

Thank you for any and all contribution to this effort -- we greatly appreciate it!  Please spread the word to anyone you believe might be interested in learning more or helping out.

Looking forward to getting folks of all ages out on the ice!

Happy Holidays,

Sam and Maureen Sezak, Chris and Melissa Hooper, and Jay and Kate Brandeis
