Can't Stop Colin

On June 7th, 2014, Colin was diagnosed with a brain tumor located in the 4th ventricle of the fluid filled area of the cerebellum. This is the lower back center of the head above the spine. Colin had surgery on June 11th at St. Louis Children's Hospital to have the tumor removed. After surgery an MRI showed they were able to remove 100% of the tumor. The tumor is malignant, called medulloblastoma, but it is not the most aggressive form. The best news possible was getting his MYC gene test results came back negative on June 20th which indicated his cancer is curable!

Even though the entire tumor was removed, Colin needs radiation and chemotherapy in order to avoid reoccurrence and kill any remaining cancer cells that may remain in his CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid). After two lumbar punctures the results did come back negative not showing any atypical cells in the CSF then leading to a standard treatment plan, as opposed to an aggressive plan.

Colin started Radiation through Proton Therapy on 7/10/14 for 6 weeks/5 days a week with 13 treatments to his head and spine, plus 17 treatments focused on the tumor location. He also began to receive once a week Chemotherapy during that time. Radiation ended 8/22/14. Colin began the 9 rounds of Chemotherapy on 9/18/14. Each round begins with a 2-3 day hospital stay at St Louis Children's Hospital and lasts 2-3 weeks with 4 week breaks in-between each round. Additionally, Colin is receiving physical and occupational therapy to get him back to his pre-surgery abilities. He is also attending school as often as he can and his teacher is able to tutor him when needed. Overall, the treatment plan will be very long and hard on him, but Colin, at just 9 years old, is a strong boy with amazing support and will beat this cancer.  The treatment plan is expected to end in late August of 2015.

Colin began playing hockey at 3 years old with the Meramec Sharks Hockey Club and also plays soccer and golf. Colin loves hockey and the St Louis Blues and himself has earned a nice reputation within his own hockey club. Colin also plays golf and soccer and loves to be active. Colin is full of character, looks at life as an adventure and with his strong personality, humor, sarcasm and strength we all believe Colin can kick cancers butt!
