Help save our beloved dog Canopus

While the holidays were filled with much joy and love, we also received some very difficult news. Canopus (our beloved dog) was assessed at The Animal Medical Center and diagnosed with a very large tumor in his left lung lobe. The good news is that Canopus’s prognosis with surgical removal is very positive as CT results show there is only a single tumor and no signs of cancer anywhere else. He will still have a  healthy right lung and hopefully two good lobes of his left remaining. Aside from the tumor, the Surgeon indicated that he is currently quite healthy, active and really fit for his age, making him a remarkable candidate for surgery.  Unfortunately, left untreated he apparently only has months to live. The fact that Canopus is still loving life, currently showing no signs of suffering and always engaged and ready to play, love and cuddle as an active member of our family makes this decision quite complex and challenging.The bad news and the only reason to not have this surgery is the cost. Diagnostics, consultations, and medication has already cost over $3300 and now the surgery is estimated at $7500. We are not sure how we would be able to cover this surgery without resorting to high-interest credit and risking financial devastation. Logically, we recognize the folly in jeopardizing our financial future to give an 11-year-old rescued dog a few more years, however, watching Canopus slowly get sick and die over the next months, knowing we could have helped him is more than we can bear. Scobie (our previous dog) was two weeks shy of 15 when he passed and we feel we need to give this boy his chance at a few more golden years. So as is often our way, we have decided to follow our hearts and believe that love can and will triumph.
