Close to 50 years ago, William B. Canipe went for his dream and opened a candy store in Charlotte, NC. While its beginnings happened in the Queen City, it didn’t truly find its home until Canipe brought his dream, his family, and the delicious candy to Myrtle Beach.
Ten years after expanding operations to Magic Harbor in 1978, Canipe opened the doors to what would be the first of three family-owned and operated Wee-R-Sweetz locations at Barefoot Landing, Broadway at the Beach and Main Street. Something about that first opening just felt right. Not only did Canipe and his employees fall in love with Myrtle Beach, but the city and its people fell in love with Wee-R-Sweetz. The store quickly filled with eager customers looking for a bite of delicious homemade fudge or the famous homemade saltwater taffy.
Customers appreciate the fact that the store makes candy the old-fashioned way and right in front of their eyes. They come in to watch the more than 90-year old taffy machines spin the simple ingredients together to create the best piece of candy in town. It quickly became more than a candy store, it became a place where customers became family. It is not uncommon for people who loved Wee-R-Sweetz when they were growing up to now bring their own kids into the store, so they can share those childhood memories.
Wee-R-Sweetz has always been about putting the customer first. This is not a nationwide chain store that comes in and isn’t invested in the community. While William Canipe has passed, the store is now run by his two sons, Todd and Butch, and his wife Barbara. They are your neighbors and Myrtle Beach residents. They’ve raised their families here and hope to keep the Wee-R-Sweetz name local for generations to come.
Now your neighbors need your help! Unfortunately, tragedy has struck the Canipe family and the Wee-R-Sweetz stores. The factory housing all of the company’s manufacturing machines and a majority of the company’s inventory was destroyed because of flooding due to Hurricane Florence. The factory sits on land on Highway 9 that had never flooded before, but this catastrophic storm brought more than three-feet of water into the factory. The damage is severe, and the cost is too much for one family to carry alone.
That is why we are asking for your help! From one Myrtle Beach family to another, please donate, if you can, to help keep the Wee-R-Sweetz candy stores open. Christmas is often one of our busiest times and we are currently not able to process orders due to the machines being down. We know it is a lot to ask because we know we aren’t the only ones struggling, but anything you can donate would be greatly appreciated. Wee-R-Sweetz loves being a Myrtle Beach tradition and we now need that same city’s help to keep this local family-owned business up and running.
