Help Retired K9 Honey Dog

In May of 2012, the incredible ‘K9 Honey Dog’ joined the Calgary Fire Department, as an Accelerant Detection Canine. During her seven years on the job, she assisted in the investigation of hundreds of fire scenes with her Fire Investigator partner. In addition to her work with this Team, Honey visited community groups and attended public events to help encourage fire prevention and safety. Honey certainly was a valuable member of the Calgary Fire Department, spending every moment of the day at her handler’s side, eagerly anticipating each moment she would be called upon to perform her expert duties.
However, in February of this year, her handler was forced to make the difficult decision to retire K9 Honey Dog from active service as she fell ill with the diagnosis of Chronic Active Hepatitis and kidney disease. Although this diagnosis cannot be conclusively linked to her daily exposure to the dangerous fire scenes she assisted with, it has been proven that acute kidney and organ problems such as hers, can be a result of exposure to highly toxic chemicals. This can also be true for her human counterparts. K9 Honey Dog’s service saved Fire Investigators from hundreds of hours of exposure to such toxins during her service.
Treatment for her condition involves regular veterinary care and daily medications which surmount to over $500 each month. These medications provide K9 Honey Dog with a quality of life and comfort, that without, she would not have.
During Honey’s time with the Calgary Fire Department, a very generous donation was made by a Calgary Energy Company, which provided the costs of her training, re-certifications, food and veterinary care. Unfortunately, once Honey became a non-active member of the Fire Department, these donated funds were no longer available to her. Moreover, unlike her ‘human members’ of the Calgary Fire Department, Honey did not receive any insurance or medical benefits upon her retirement. As a result, her handler has since personally taken on ALL associated costs, including the continuous veterinary care and mounting medical bills associated with her treatment.
This Go-Fund-Me Page is being set up in hopes that we can provide some financial support for retired K9 Honey Dog, as she, and her handler travel through this difficult time together. All funds raised will go directly to her veterinary care and daily medication costs. It is our goal to raise enough money to cover her medication bills for one year, with an approximate total of $6000. It is our way of thanking her for her service and her incredible contribution to the CFD members and the citizens of Calgary she served to protect. She was truly a hero behind many fire scenes.
