Candy Major Medical Fund

In January, just after the holidays, my mother, Candy Major,  collapsed to the ground in excrutiating pain, feeling like she was about to die.

She almost did. An ambulance rushed her to the hospital. Her blood pressure was very low.
The doctors were able to stabilize her and run tests.  They found that her body had been going through septic shock. Her organs were starting to fail and that's why she felt like she was dieing.

It turns out she had been very sick for a while and because of her treatment for her back issues it had gone unnoticed. There was an infection through out her body, her organs, and in her blood stream. After 2 weeks of tests they discovered she has a fungal infection growing throughout her body and fungal meningitis in her brain.

Its a very rare condition. There were only 3 other cases in South Carolina all of last year. Since the condition is so rare the drugs are not perfect. They have lots of serious side effects, the largest being permanent kidney and liver damage.

My mother has serious back problems and a morphine pump surgically implanted in her body. The doctors found that the morphine pump had become contaminated with fungus. As the pump pushed morphine throughout her body it also pushed fungus throughout her body. The fungus grew internally everywhere. In her organs, her muscles, her blood, her brain. It's still there.

Now it is August. She has been bed-ridden since January. The drugs are still working to fight the fungal infection. The pressure on her brain from the meningitis causes extreme light sensitivity, sound sensitivity,  extreme migraines, persistent hallucinations, anxiety, depression, and inability to concentrate.  Her body is always in pain. It hurts to move. She sleeps most of the day because it's too painful to be awake. For her it hurts to think. The drugs are having the side effect of damaging her liver and kidneys. The doctors are talking about putting her on dialysis soon.

At this point she will be on these fungal drugs and in the same situation for at least another six months. Best case scenario.

The bills are piling up and as a last resort we are reaching out here for help to afford to pay the medical bills so she can get the treatment she needs.

She estimates that to catch up on the bills, the portion that her insurance is not covering, would be $26,000.

Please donate to help us out. My siblings and I love our mom. Please help us afford the treatments to help her fight the fungus. If you're in the Bluffon area and cant afford to help with money, you can still help out. Even to come to sit with her for a couple hours during the day would help her so much.

Our need is urgent. Your generosity is graciously appreciated.

Thank you for anything you can do,
