My mom was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in November 2017.
She is the strongest person I know. She has been fighting this disease with heart and soul ever since. The only cure for leukemia is a bone marrow transplant.
Since she started her treatment she has not been able to go into remission. She was in a trial study at the University of Miami where she had to spend 10 days a month for 5 months in the Miami area depleting all of her savings because she had to stay within 15 minutes of the hospital. Then she was referred to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa and travels there weekly for treatment. She is now on a daily chemo pill among other medications like anti-fungal, antibiotics, etc. to keep her from getting sick.
The amount of money that these medications cost is outrageous! Some pharmaceuticals offer help, some do not. Insurance pays some, but out of pocket is still mounting. I could go on and on about that!
The goal is to reduce her disease to less than 5% in her bone marrow and she will qualify for a bone marrow transplant!! At last biopsy she was at 11%! We are hopeful the new drugs will get us there!
Meanwhile, she could use some help.
WHEN approved for transplant she will be required to stay within 15 minutes of the hospital for 60 days. 60 days of hotel stay. The least expensive approved hotel is $129/night plus taxes, etc. You can do the math. Yikes!
