Laura's Cancer Fight Club

This is a story about our friend Laura.

Laura's always been the life of the party...full of life, love and laughter. She's the core of our mutual friendships and her amazing energy has the power to connect us all. She has given us so much of herself to all of us. She has touched so many people.....and now she needs all of our help.

This is HER fight but she can't do it alone...

In 2006, Laura was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Her treatment involved surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. She was told the cancer was aggressive and fast moving, but was hopeful that the treatment would result in her cancer not returning at all.

In 2007, Laura was back to normal and enthusiastically returned to work. During this time, she was on hormone therapy, which continued for five years.

In 2012, her hormone therapy ended. Less than a year later, Laura developed a cough and it was thought to be the onset of adult asthma.

In 2013, several doctors told her there was nothing to worry about. She was prescribed inhalers, antibiotics, cough medication and x-rays were suggested. An X-ray on her lunch break forced into the hospital. Her left lung had filled with fluid.  A needle was used to remove the fluid ... immediately her lung began to fill up again. Further analysis discovered that the cancer had returned and metastasized around her lung cavity. Further testing discovered that it had also travelled to her bones. She was immediately admitted to the hospital, and it was discovered that both lungs had filled with fluid, making it extremely difficult to breathe. She was again put on hormone treatment to keep the cancer at bay and hopeful about returning to work and life  in a few months.

Laura's body didn't respond to the treatment, and she was hospitalized five times over the next few months with the development of blood clots. The treatments were extremely hard on her lungs and body. At this point, the doctor advised that they had tried everthing and reccommended rest at home with morphine. Everything seemed to stop.

With nothing to lose at this point, Laura felt that she had to do everything possible to stay alive. She put all efforts into mind and complementary therapies such as naturopathic supplements, organic foods, meditation and positive affirmations, etc.. She also had begun palliative chemotherapy.

Laura started to see results! The fluid began subside and she regained some strength.

During all of this, while not being to work, Laura had been using ALL resources available for alternative therapies, because they have been making such a positive impact on her overall well-being.

All of this, has caused Laura tremendous financial stress because she has been off work for 18 months living on a dissability income.

She has had to use all of her savings for these health efforts, medical bills and drugs not covered by her health plan. This has all been further complicated by a  miscalculation in her disability benefits. In order to prevent them from being suspended completely, she now has to pay the overcalculation back...

This is what we are doing about it:

Aside from contacting officials and obtaining legal aid we've decided to create a Cancer Fight Club fundraiser for Laura. We are doing this in both Calgary and Vancouver, and we need your help.

Laura has done so much to enhance  and enrich our lives, we want to do something to return the love.

We are asking everyone who visits this page to join Laura in her Cancer Fight Club  and everything that stands in the way of her ability to fully  enjoy her life.

We appreciate you taking the time to read Laura's story and for giving the gift of love, hope and life!
