Kelly Lynch McCarley was diagnosed with a rare Ovarian cancer in February 2017.
Kelly and her family have lived in Owings, MD for years, raising two wonderful children. Kelly spent 18 years working for the YMCA of Washington at Camp Letts where she spent most of her time providing community service to both children and adults who were less fortunate. After an injury, Kelly could no longer do the strenuous job and with a heavy heart, proceeded to look for a new position. Once again, Kelly went into the field where she could help people by obtaining a position at the Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center at Anne Arundel Medical.
In the OCTOBER of 2016, Kelly began to have major health issues including, breathing, severe dehydration and running high fevers of 105. Doctors spent the next SEVERAL months trying to find the cause finally admitting Kelly in MARCH 2017. A Large tumor type mass (size of a grapefruit) was found in her abdomen. Due to the specialized surgery required, she was transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore to undergo HI-PEC surgery.
This was a 14+ hour surgery. Her spleen, gall bladder, ovaries, uterus and a portion of her colon were removed. The surgeon also removed 12 Liters of fluid. Kelly then under went a hot chemo technique which would be run throughout her stomach for 90 minutes. This treatment considered experimental was not covered by insurance. Two days later she returned to surgery due to internal bleeding and spent another 3 hours on the table. Tough gal to say the least.
Kelly was in Mercy Medical Center for the entire month of May and then sent home. She meets bi-weekly with her oncologist for chemo treatments which take up to 2 hours, some days it also includes intravenous fluids with potassium to keep her from dehydrating. Many times she has had to make another trek back to the hospital for more fluids. Then at the end of chemo week Kelly returns to have her port/machine removed and be checked out before having a week off from treatments.
Not over yet...The next three-4 days are hell after chemo to say the least.
All she can do is sleep and or be sick but she keeps on going. Kelly is to weak to drive and walks with a cane. Another issue due to surgery has left her right leg unable to function properly causing her to fall unexpectedly so she is generally with someone at all times. Kelly’s family takes turns driving her to and from Anne Arundel Medical Center and we marvel at her determination to get well as soon as possible.
Kelly’s Cancer takes it toll again on her life!
She received a letter from her employer stating that they could no longer hold her job and therefore they had to let her go. Kelly had only been working for Sports Medicine for 8 months so she was not eligible for FMLA.
Until Kelly is evaluated in 2018 she can’t apply for disability. That said, Kelly and Scott could really use monetary help from their family and friends during this crisis.
Kelly's one true love has always been her horses and the riders she taught! Riders she taught have now gone on to college and adulthood but still stay in touch with her regularly. She taught so many her love of horses and had them hang around her and the barn instead of the mall or the streets! Many of her peers describe her vibrant, committed, passionate and a special way with people. Her riders and their parents call her a wonderful role model! If you needed anything, Kelly was always there!
