My Daughters Cancer Treatment

5/27 Hey all .. wanted to give an update on Lizzie as it has been awhile. She is doing good. Still doing treatments for one week and then having a two weeks off to help her body recover. The chemo has been exhausting on her but she maintains such a positive attitude. She is on track to go to Colorado Christian University in August and just graduated from high school yesterday. I thank you all for your continued support and prayers!
3/2 Lizzie starts her 12th round in a few weeks. In between now and then, Lizzie has scans on 3/4 and then on 3/15 goes on a missions trip to the Dominican Republic. Please pray that her scans will be great but also for her health and safety on this trip.
Update 2/6 Lizzie to still doing treatments. Her scans came back that her tumors were not active, but given the frequency of the cancer coming back, the Docs want to continue to do treatment until her body just can’t handle it anymore.

As many of you know, Lizzie's cancer came back yet again. Unfortunately, she failed out of a phase 1 trial because her cancer continued to spread. Upon speaking with her doctors, we decided to repeat a chemo combo that we used in the past. The goal is to "kick the can down the road", hopefully to regain remission in hopes of better treatment options available should it come back.

Lizzy was born on September 26, 2000 with her twin sister Anneslee. Lizzy has had a very healthy life up until May of 2010. In May of 2010, Lizzy started to complain of pains in her hip. After several visits to her primary care doctor, Lizzy was told that she was experiencing growing pains. Throughout the remainder of 2010 and beginning of 2011, Lizzy continued to have increasing pains in her hip, all thought to be growing pains. In April of 2011, Lizzy started to routinely experience high grade fevers which caught the attention of her doctor. On April 24th, Lizzy was sent to an orthopedic doctor to test for Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. The previous Friday, Lizzy’s orthopedic doctor had attended a seminar on detecting Ewing Sarcoma. Upon receiving the results from an MRI, Lizzy’s orthopedic doctor immediately emailed the seminar leader that he may have a case of Ewing Sarcoma.
On April 28, 2011, Lizzy’s world was rocked. She was diagnosed with stage 4 Ewing Sarcoma which had spread to her lungs, spine, shoulders, elbows, knees and bone marrow. Lizzy’s initial diagnosis was pretty bleak as this is a rare and extremely aggressive. Lizzy immediately began an aggressive treatment plan of chemotherapy, an operation to remove the tumor in her lung, and has been responding very well to the chemo. She is being referred to as “the miracle child” by her doctors and even won an art contest at the hospital for Christmas card design.
The road ahead is steep for Lizzy and her family. On October 31, 2011, Lizzy underwent a very powerful round of chemo which killed many cells, including her bone marrow. She received a bone marrow transplant to replace the bone marrow killed from the chemotherapy. Her hospital stay consisted of roughly 100 days between the hospital and a unit across the street called “the Brent House.” .
In life, we find ourselves with the emotions of “not my child”, “God will keep my kids safe” etc but the bottom line is that each and every one of ours lives can be changed in a moment’s time. When faced with a change, we like to think that we would respond a certain way. Lizzy is my strength! She is by far the strongest person I know on this planet! She went from the emotions of “at least its not cancer”, to “at least its not terminal”, to I am going to be part of that small percentage!....originally given an 8 percent chance of survival.
Since 2011, Lizzy has gone into remission 2 times and was yet diagnosed with a brain tumor in October of 2014. Her struggle continues as do the daily struggles of so many innocent children in this world.
2017- Lizzie came out of remission for a 4th time and underwent radiation treatment. We chose not to do chemo treatment this time because it has just been too hard on her. She recently had scans that showed that the two new spots had been effectively treated by the radiation. Please continue to pray that her body and soul continues to fight this "terminal" form of cancer.
Life brings many struggles and how we respond to those struggles tells a lot of our soul. I am seeking your help as these bills and other associated costs have now become a legal issue.
Please consider whatever you can afford. All contributions will go directly towards Lizzie's care!
