Thank you for your interest in my initiative. I am a grade 9 student from Prince Rupert, British Columbia, who was selected by the Science Fair foundation of BC to represent Canada at the 2018 International Science Fair
held in Taiwan this January. There are over 80 countries participating in the event, with each country sending 2 students. I am honored and excited to be one of the two selected from Canada.
The research that won me this amazing opportunity was entitled: Microbial Film Power Generation. It essentially looked at an innovative method of capturing electricity from natural microbial decomposition in bogs. I presented my findings at the Canada-wide science fair in 2016 (Montreal, Quebec) and part II in 2017 (Regina, Saskatchewan). Yes, it took me 2 long years to fully develop and test my concept.
My research project won gold at both national competitions, from amongst hundreds of participants from across Canada. I also received a number of other awards, such as, the Earth Science Award, the Renewable Energy Award, and several others.
In Taiwan, I would present my research to a panel of international judges, who would evaluate the strength, creativity and innovative merits of my work. And who knows, maybe they'll even be impressed... Other than competing, we will also be given the opportunity to discover new science and technology, social and cultural realities, and the overall beauty of the city of Taipei, Taiwan.
To attend, I need to raise about $3,000. This will be spent on my flight ($1,100), food & accommodations for 10 nights ($1,000), local travel ($200), gifts for hosts ($200), entry fees to local sites ($200), Canada team jacket ($100), poster printing ($200).
The event is scheduled for late January, leaving only 6 short weeks to complete my fundraising. I am reaching out to everyone who may wish to support me to make this trip possible. I am confident that I will reach this goal and be able to participate with my team.
For all of those who support my efforts, I would be happy to share regular updates during my trip, as well as, a final report of my experiences upon returning.
I look forward to proudly representing Canada on behalf of all young scientists, especially girls who aspire to bring their capabilities to the forefront of this great field of scholarship!
