Epilepsy Camp YouCan

Camp YouCan is a 3 night, 4 day overnight camp for children and teens with Epilepsy, ages 7-17; the first of its kind in Nebraska and Iowa. This summer June 1-4, campers with Epilepsy will see all that they CAN do!
As the flagship program of the Midwest YouCan Foundation, Camp YouCan helps campers step out of their comfort zone in a fun, safe environment — all in the company of other campers who understand the day-to-day challenges of living with epilepsy. Every experience is designed to help our campers build self-confidence, develop meaningful relationships and discover a world of dreams they can achieve.

Epilepsy is an unpredictable condition that often leads to feelings of social stigma and isolation. At one moment a child can be playing a game with fellow classmates in PE class and the next moment they are feeling exhausted, tired, confused, nauseous, scared, embarrassed and afraid—all because of a seizure. Camp YouCan was developed to reduce the stigma and isolation, while allowing children with epilepsy to meet others with the same condition and enjoy a safe overnight camp experience. Camp YouCan will provide campers with 4 days full of opportunities to strengthen self-confidence, develop new friendships, explore independence, and to see all that they CAN do!

Camp is a unique experience that every child deserves. And there's nothing quite like watching a child's face light up with the joy of discovering new friends, the pride of accomplishment, and the wonder that nature offers. Throughout their 4 days at Camp YouCan, campers will learn team-building skills at the ropes course, zip line, fishing, boating, and archery. Group discussion and art sessions allow the children to discuss their feelings and learn how others cope with their epilepsy. Unplugged from the constant buzz of computers, television, video games, and cell phones, children find themselves at camp — making genuine connections with other children with epilepsy, rediscovering the fun in physical fitness, learning their own strengths, and finding their own voices.

For 4 days this June, campers do not have to worry about explaining their seizures to their peers; they can simply have fun while enjoying nature and the outdoors. The friendships made at camp often continue throughout the year and for many to come!

Camp YouCan is funded solely by donations. We try to keep camper charges for camp as low as possible. Expensive medications, hospital visits, MRI/CT scans, doctor appointments and many other costs necessary to treat epilepsy can be a big stressor for families. Your donation generous donation to Camp YouCan will 1) help keep camp affordable for families 2) provide funds to run camp itself. Your donation can help us provide this amazing experience to extraordinary children and teens living with Epilepsy.
