Campi estivi di Villamagica

Nella primavera 2016 abbiamo fondato l’associazione culturale LUMI, in Valnerina, nel cuore verde dell’Umbria. L’intento iniziale era di organizzare eventi, mostre, conferenze, residenze e spettacoli per riportare vita in questa zona, bellissima, ricca di natura e storia ma in fase di spopolamento. Ad agosto eravamo pronti a partire con le prime attività, ma il 26 agosto ci fu il primo di una serie di eventi sismici ci ha imposto di rivedere i nostri piani. Due dei fondatori di Lumi che vivono nella zona cercavano uno spazio dove immagazzinare gli strumenti musicali dei loro studi, quelli che si sarebbe riusciti ad estrarre dalle case danneggiate con l’aiuto dei Vigili del Fuoco. Il 31 ottobre il Comune di Sellano ci offrì l’ex chiesa prefabbricata del villaggio di casette di legno a Villamagina, dove si erano rifugiati i più di 500 sfollati della zona.
Appena visto lo spazio, ampio, accogliente e sicuro, con le scuole chiuse e immersi in una situazione di emergenza, con i genitori comprensibilmente preoccupati e occupati a gestire una situazione difficile e caotica, soprattutto psicologicamente, ci è parso naturale fare del luogo un uso che andasse al di là del semplice magazzino e l’abbiamo immediatamente aperto ai circa 80 bambini e ragazzi che si trovavano nel villaggio.
Una serie di telefonate e una pagina Facebook dettero il via a una corsa di solidarietà che risultò in una gran quantità di giocattoli, libri e cibo donati già nei primissimi giorni oltre a donazioni in denaro.
Dal 1 novembre 2016 la ‘Ludoteca Villamagica’ fu aperta tutti i pomeriggi e i giovani, fino a 45 al giorno nel periodo dell’emergenza, ne fecero un luogo d’incontro dove passare il tempo a giocare e socializzare. Una sa scuola di musica partì in modo spontaneo e improvvisato, con grande entusiasmo dei bambini, insieme alla formazione di un coro che cantò l’inno del paese durante la cerimonia di presentazione della qualifica di Sellano come uno dei “Borghi più belli d’Italia” che era stata programmata già da molto prima del terremoto.
Ogni domenica organizzammo concerti e spettacoli teatrali, offerti volontariamente da artisti provenienti da varie parti d’Italia, e ci furono laboratori di creazione di fumetti, corsi di chitarra, batteria e percussioni, un laboratorio di body percussion, una giornata di danze popolari, animazione dedicata al beneficio della risata, laboratori di falegnameria, creazione di libri fatti a mano e altro ancora.
Invitammo anche una psicologa esperta in post-trauma per una giornata di incontri individuali con i bambini e di gruppo con gli adulti, e una terapeuta specializzata in arte terapia per una sessione di distruzione creativa, tutte esperienze che abbiamo continuato da allora.
Il luogo è divenuto un punto di riferimento riconosciuto da tutti, dove i bambini si sentono sicuri e coltivano i semi di una comunità in divenire.
Prima del terremoto la maggioranza dei bambini e ragazzi dopo la scuola tornava alle loro case, sparse su di un territorio vasto, e con poche possibilità e ragioni di incontrarsi, dall’apertura della ludoteca questi bambini hanno cominciato a formare una loro comunità che nel tempo si è sviluppata con effetti positivi e che speriamo siano il seme per una miglior coesione sociale.
Passata l’emergenza abbiamo continuato ad organizzare eventi e laboratori e nel luglio del 2017 abbiamo organizzato quattro settimane di campi estivi, ricchi di attività artistiche, culturali e naturalistiche. Nel 2018 abbiamo ripetuto l’esperienza con gran gioia di tutti. I soci di Lumi offrono il loro lavoro gratuitamente e il comune offre gli spazi e il trasporto dei bambini, ma le quattro settimane di attività costano circa 8000 €, principalmente per i compensi degli operatori esterni all’associazione, i materiali e i pasti per i bambini, mediamente 20 dai 3 ai 13 anni, che partecipano alle attività quotidiane.
Nei primi due anni siamo riusciti a coprire i costi grazie alle donazioni ricevute dopo il terremoto, che però ora sono esaurite. Quest’anno vogliamo riproporre i campi estivi, che sono diventati una parte integrante della vita sociale dei giovani, ma ci occorrono almeno 5000 € per riuscirci, quindi abbiamo deciso di tentare la strada del crowdfunding per raggiungere il nostro obiettivo e non deludere i bambini che aspettano con ansia i campi estivi del 2019.

The initial intent was to organize events, exhibitions, conferences, residencies and shows to bring back life to this area, beautiful, rich in nature and history but in a phase of depopulation. In August we were ready to start with the first activities, but on August 26th there was the first of a series of seismic events that forced us to review our plans. Two of the founders living in the area were looking for a space to store the musical instruments from their studios, those that could be extracted from the damaged houses with the help of the Fire Brigade. On October 31st, the Municipality of Sellano offered us the former prefabricated church of the log-cabin village in Villamagina, where the more than 500 displaced people had taken refuge.
As soon as we saw the space, large, welcoming and safe, considering the schools were closed and we were immersed in an emergency situation, with parents understandably worried and busy managing a difficult and chaotic situation, above all psychologically, it seemed natural to make use of the place beyond a mere storage and we immediately opened it to around 80 children and teenagers who were in the village.
A series of phone calls and a Facebook page gave way to a solidarity effort which resulted in a large number of toys, books and food donated in the first few days, in addition to cash donations.
From 1st November 2016 the ‘Ludoteca Villamagica’ was opened every afternoon and the young people, up to 45 per day during the emergency period, turned it into a meeting place where they could spend time playing and socializing. A school of music was spontaneously started, with the children’s great enthusiasm, along with the formation of a choir that sang the hymn of the town during the ceremony for presenting Sellano with the recognition as one of the “most beautiful villages in Italy” which had been planned long before the earthquake.
Every Sunday we organized concerts and theatrical performances, offered voluntarily by artists from various parts of Italy, and there were workshops for creating comics, guitar, drums and percussion courses, a body percussion workshop, a day of folk dances, animation dedicated to the benefit of laughter, carpentry workshops, creation of handmade books and more.
We also invited a post-trauma psychologist for a day of individual meetings with children and in groups with adults, and a therapist specialized in art therapy for a session of creative destruction, all of which we have continued since.
Later the Council offered us a larger space where we developed our activities further, and the place has become a point of reference recognized by all, where children feel safe and cultivate the seeds of a developing community.
Before the earthquake the majority of children and teenagers after school returned to their homes, spread over a vast territory, and with few chances and reasons to meet, since the opening of Villamagica these children have begun to form their own community, which has developed over time with positive effects, and we hope that it will be the seed for a better social cohesion. Once the emergency was over, we continued to organize events and workshops and in July 2017 we organized four weeks of summer camps, rich in artistic, cultural and naturalistic activities. In 2018 we repeated the experience with great joy of all. The members of Lumi offer their work for free and the municipality offers the spaces and the transport of the children, but the four weeks of activity cost around 8000 €, mainly for the compensation of the professionals outside the association, the materials and the meals for the children, on average 20 from 3 to 13 years old, who participate in the daily activities.
In the first two years we managed to cover the costs thanks to the donations received after the earthquake, but these are now exhausted. This year we want to offer the summer camps again, which have become an integral part of the social life of young people, but we need at least € 5,000 to succeed, so we decided to try the crowdfunding path to reach our goal and not disappoint our lovely children who look forward to the 2019 summer camps.
