BACKGROUND

Anand Isher International School (AIIS) is located in Nurmahal, India. Nurmahal is a small town in the state of Punjab that is surrounded by over 70 small villages and acts as a hub of economic activity for the surrounding rural area.

The school is a key institution for local people and their children. However, in 2006 the school was closed due to falling standards of education, ineffective management and the poor condition of resources & facilities provided to the students. The dilapidated building became a health hazard and a safety issue.

In 2008, the trustees of Create International UK, approached the chair of the trust who owns the land on which the school is built and requested them to grant a lease to reopen the school, recognising the need in the local area.

In April 2008, the school reopened with only 4 students and ended the first academic year with 14 students. The loss of the institution locally meant that the trustees had to build trust within the local community and an education offer that truly looks to support their children to not only perform well academically, but to achieve their full potential. Since that first day, the school - through the efforts of Create International - has now grown to 531 students who come from over 27 of the local rural villages.

The trustees have always supported a holistic approach to education for local people and the school acts as a true community hub. For instance, through partnering with local health institutions to increase access to services for local people to partnering with state and national institutions to ensure that education is of the highest standard based on best practice.

CURRENT FUNDRAISING

Currently, we are focusing on fundraising to set up a Resource Centre, fully furnished and equipped with IT and a library.

Young rural people seek meaningful ways of engaging with their own culture and society but usually do not get enough opportunities.  Create International believes that if adequately trained and sensitively nurtured in an infrastructure which is fully resourced, young adults can demonstrate amazing strengths in their personal and professional development.

The Resource Centre will function as an IT lab and library for the secondary school students, supporting them at a critical transitional time.

In addition, it will be used as vocational training centre for young adults who have missed out on opportunity of education, therefore teaching them skills which will enable them to get into employment. Courses will be delivered in partnership with a polytechnic college in nearby Jalandhar.
