Veterans commit suicide 1.5 times the rate of civilians – on average that’s 22 veterans committing suicide per day.  More veterans are dying after returning from tours of duty than are dying overseas. 2.6 million vets have returned home from Iraq and Afghanistan.  30% suffer from physical injury or PTSD.  For the other 70% there’s often unseen injuries just as impactful. Those unseen injuries can seriously inhibit their return to successful civilian life.  Cammies & Canines is changing that!

Over 500,000 veterans are homeless in the US.  San Diego alone has 1,100 homeless veterans.  All of whom could benefit from a roof over their head, hot running water, fresh food, and a safe place to get “squared away”! Cammies & Canines has the answer!

There’s a new volunteer initiative led by Marine Veteran Kalani Creutzburg who, not too long ago, battled with homelessness and suicidal thoughts himself.  His future once looked bleak until he finally raised his hand and asked for help.  Unsurprisingly the entire community pulled together to help him. Fast forward 2 years, standing on his own two feet again and now wanting to “pay it forward” he’s created the non-profit Cammies & Canines Sanctuary where they’re helping homeless veterans transition off the streets and find healing through a canine’s loving companionship.  This is a true Cinderella story in that he went from homelessness to securing 289 acres in San Diego to house transitioning veterans during their “journey back home”.

“I always wondered why somebody didn’t do something about that, then I realized I am somebody.”

Help the effort today.  These veterans will get a roof over their head, hot water, free food, their own bed with clean linens, on-site support groups, work experience, online education, community and more!  Depending on their needs they’ll also be given a rescue dog to take care of as part of the ‘rehabilitation’ process – saving 2 lives at once!

No donation is too small or too big.  All donations will make an impact TODAY... like this Marine Veteran who's been homeless for 8 months until we rescued him from the streets!

The Cammies & Canines sanctuary is  a safe haven that will also offer equestrian therapy, horticultural therapy, yoga and more!  The ultimate goal is to establish a high level of mental/emotional wellness amongst these veterans in order to return them back to society as productive contributing citizens.

The federal and state systems do what they can to help veterans transition from military life to the civilian sector, but Kalani and his partners Tony Gallardo (LtCol, USMC Ret) and Nate Schoemer (SSgt, USMC) have picked up some of the burden in order to help reduce the veteran suicide rate and homelessness.  He started a GoFundMe campaign to give this project a boost and doing all they can to stretch every dollar as far as possible.  All the construction and programming is made possible through a network of volunteers.  It’s a true community effort to give back to the men and women who sacrificed so much in service to our Country.  Regardless of where you are in the world we hope you’ll join the community and support this effort today.

“If not now than when?”

The 289-acre sanctuary is 5 miles west of Barrett Lake in Dulzura.  The Cammies & Canines Sanctuary sits in a valley between picturesque peaks and blue skies!  Currently the site is already set up for recreational camping for 40 units, 7 different structures including a community kitchen and lodge, independent male and female showers, 2 apartments (2 bedroom each), a studio apartment, and (3) two bedroom homes, and multiple RV hookups.  More than enough room to house transitioning veterans, dogs, horses, livestock and more!

The outdoor area includes a baseball field, 20x40 foot swimming pool perfect for rest and relaxation, orchards, and an up and starting vinyard.  Grounds are vast with abundance of open space and carefully maintained areas which is perfect for veterans to enjoy the peacefulness nature brings.  This ranch has an orchard rich with plums, pomegranates, grapefruit, apples, lemons, limes, naval oranges and blood oranges, both black and white walnuts. The upper orchard has avocado and peaches but was once intended to be a vinyard and produces grapes today. Our veterans will learn how to maintain plants and fruit trees and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

This is the perfect place for veterans to decompress, rediscover purpose, and transition back into society in a loving responsible way. Be part of this life-changing effort!

Cammies & Canines has been highlighted for there efforts on ABC news, nation television show “Right This Minute”, and most recently Animal Planet’s “Rescue Dog to Super Dog”.  They’ve also been recognized twice by San Diego as a Small Business Award finalist and placed on the Veterans Honor Roll.

“In the military we had to rely on our brothers/sisters on our left and right. We never left anybody behind. The same mindset still holds true today,” said Kalani. “Nothing’s changed.  The mission continues even after service in the military. As a Marine I’m putting myself at the point of friction doing what nobody else is willing to do.”
