Camille, our youngest daughter, after a normal, uneventful, full-term pregnancy, was delivered by emergency C-section.  A leg length discrepancy was immediately identified by her attending NICU RNs. We quickly came to learn that Camille was born with a congenital short leg or Congenital Femoral Deficiency (CFD), which is a rare birth defect that is characterized by a short femur and associated with hip and knee deformity, deficiency, or instability. Hers is a more severe type that was previously known as Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency (PFFD). To date, we have seen various orthopedic surgeons in Oregon and California.  Camille has had 5 surgeries to date, including corrective “Super-Hip” surgery in June of 2017 at Loma Linda University Hospital. This surgery was pursued in order to correct her hip dysplasia, cut and straighten her femur and prepare her for starting the leg lengthening process. Her surgery was complicated by infection and a difficult recovery, which required an extended stay in California and the separation of our family for months. We are extremely grateful for the multitude of support we received, which enabled us to endure this challenge.

<div>Camille has had additional surgery in 2017-2018, at which time, an external fixator was placed on her femur in order to lengthen the shortened femur. She had complications with this procedure and subluxation of the femur was noted.  This condition develops when the tension from lengthening begins to pull the femur head away from the hip. At the conclusion of this lengthening episode a titanium rod was placed her femur for support.  With the onset of the pandemic, Camille had delays in her treatment and reocvery. In April of 2022 we had another consult with her surgeon Dr Nelson.  We had hoped to initiate additional lengthening, but were informed that Camille's hip could not tolerate another lengthening and the needed surgery was discussed.  Camille is now scheduled to have a Triple Osteotomy which is a cutting of her pelvis and reshaping to create a stronger, functional hip.  She will also have her femur rotated and reoriented.

<div>We are asking for your prayers, donations and support of love again, as Camille will have this surgery again at Loma Linda University Hospital in California this October 2022.  We truly appreciate any support, knowing that Camille is our responsibility, yet having the awareness that we truly cannot manage this alone.   It is difficult to ask for help, but we have the challenge of our older daughter remaining in school in Oregon, being separated as a family again, meeting our routine expenses, as well as, the exceptional bills associated with medical expenses, travel and housing. We are eternally grateful to our friends, family and for the kindness of complete strangers. Your love and the Grace of God have enabled us to endure this challenge thus far and it is our hope that the grace and support will continue to somehow carry us through the upcoming surgeries. Please know that all well wishes, prayers and even the smallest of donations are appreciated. With tears of gratitude and appreciations for not having to face this challenge alone, we thank you.
