Campaign Against Camden Road Closures

Open Camden’s Roads!

Throughout history, one of the defining characteristics of a dictatorial regime has been the abuse of emergency powers to further a political agenda.  And today, Camden’s cabinet are using the emergency of the coronavirus pandemic to force unnecessary road closures and cycle lanes upon its population.

Camden Council decided to remove residents’ democratic rights when introducing LTNs (Low Traffic Neighbourhoods) to many sections of the Borough of Camden. The stated aim was to avoid rat runs, lower traffic and encourage alternatives to motorised journeys during COVID.

However, a great many residents and local businesses are now experiencing first-hand unprecedented traffic jams on main roads (due to the road barricades), an increase in pollution and decrease in business.  The LTN’s have just displaced the traffic onto other residential streets, filtering the traffic onto gridlocked roads.  The nation is currently under lockdown restrictions and therefore the traffic flow is not even near the usual capacity, so fast forward a year and the traffic will be at record levels.

Who we are:
We are a group of residents seeking change to LTN’s across the Borough of Camden. We came together recently and share deep concerns over the way LTN’s have been implemented in our Borough, specifically a democratic deficit and lack of meaningful consultation on the schemes, apparent conflicts of interest and impact on families living on main roads.  We want to rebalance the wide-reaching ripple effect that has seen unprecedented standing traffic around the Borough and a disproportionate “offloading” of exhaust emissions onto our neighbours (whilst roads in the dead end LTN’s stand empty).

After months of urging Camden Council to open our roads through petitions and social media, our campaign now moves on to its legal phase. It's our best chance for success and we really need your help to meet upcoming legal fees.

We’ve set a target of £30,000 in order to fund this challenge and however small, every contribution will take us one step closer to redressing the balance. Help us to achieve our goal.

If 2,000 people give £15 each, we'll have reached our target. If 1,000 people give £30 each, we will have reached our target.

To date, our legal groundwork has come for free, through volunteer lawyers, who will continue to contribute to standard legal work.  Now, we need specialist representation, expertise, and funds for any activities and costs associated with the legal proceedings.

What will happen to my donation?
All donations will go directly towards our legal fees. Our campaign is entirely run by volunteers, none of whom receive compensation of any kind. To date, we have covered all core costs from our own pockets. But, as the campaign grows, we need to secure additional funding to make sure we can grow sustainably.
