For my birthday party this year, if you were thinking of bringing along a gift, I would instead like you to consider making a small donation to a charity that is special to me.

Big Group Hug is a grass roots charity that was started by my wonderful godmother, and in the 2018/19 financial year assisted more than 1600 babies and children across Victoria.  The charity is completely volunteer run (by over 100 amazing volunteers!) and makes a difference to families in our community every day.

More information about Big Group Hug Ltd: Big Group Hug provided over 30,000 items of material aid to more than 900 families throughout 2015/2016. We are pleased to have been able to support families experiencing family violence, families experiencing homelessness, asylum seekers, refugees, foster children and many others. Big Group Hug is proud to provide this assistance free-of-charge and to be operated solely by volunteers. We have received material donations from over 1,500 families as well as corporate and community group donors who have given us over 100,000 items to distribute to disadvantaged people in the community. Finding new homes for these good quality donations not only supports people in need, it also serves the environment by diverting items from landfill. Big Group Hug accepts and rehomes items including children’s clothing, toys, books, cots, bassinettes, prams, highchairs, infant formula and bedding – just to mention a few! When we receive an item that we can’t rehome, we liaise with other charities in an effort to find a suitable recipient. Big Group Hug has established multiple collection points for donations throughout the northern region of Melbourne including Rosanna, Reservoir, Doreen, Mernda, Epping, Eltham and Greensborough thus expanding our reach and increasing our capacity to mobilise the community to support others. We have received help from more than 100 volunteers in many different capacities such as sorting and packing, driving, administration, fundraising, marketing and communications, IT, book keeping just to mention a few. Our valued volunteers include individuals, corporate volunteer groups, and school and community groups. Cumulative volunteer hours exceeded 15,000 in 2016 alone.
