Dan and Deanna's Doo-Doo Disaster

On July 13th, 2017, Dan and Deanna's day started as a normal day.  With the rains coming down, Deanna thought it would be a great day to stay in, snuggle, and watch a movie.  However, their plans soon changed.

Dan, Deanna, and their 15 month old, Ezra live in Attica, one of the hardest hit towns by Thursday's torential rains and flooding. As the rains came down, the waters rose, especially the creek behind their house.  The Calkins' have feared flooding in their basement several times this year.  But what caused this nightmare for them at about noon on Thursday was much worse than anyone could have ever imagined. 

Starting at about 12:00PM, the sewage started to back up through their toilet in their finished basement. Before long, water and sewage were pouring into their home.  For 16 hours the watery mess was pouring like a fountain from their toilet into their entire basement, leaving a grand total of 5ft of water. 

The Calkins' have flood insurance but found out that what they thought they were paying for in a premium actually only covers $10,000 in essential damage and structural repairs (i.e. hot water heater, furnace, dry wall, etc.)

Dan does amazing wood-working as a side hobby in his workshop in the basement.  Thousands of dollars of equiptment and tools succombed to the watery sludge.  Among other items lost were furniture, toys, board games, and many other personal items.  Their basement is where they often played games with friends, had family dinners, and just hung out as a family. 

Despite this terrible disaster, we can however, Praise God that no one was hurt in this process and that although many material things were lost, lives were not!

Dan works as a social worker at Heritage Christian Services and Deanna teaches 6th grade at Letchworth Central School District. Dan is also beginning a new journey in Ministry at Northeastern Seminary this fall.
