Calero High School Prom

WHO WE ARE

We are a tiny high school of fewerthan 200 students in South San Jose, established to serve those who would otherwise slip through the cracks.  Students are admitted to Calero with a median grade point average of 1.30. After two semesters, those same students have grade point averages of 3.5. By their senior year, most of them apply to colleges and universities, something which they didn't think was possible just a few years before. Our students are inspiring and overcoming the odds each and every day! They have learned how to rise and learn from challenges and failures.

Our school staff makes miracles every day, taking kids who don't care and believe that no one cares about them and transforming them by showing them how much we care. The watchword of Calero is LOVE. Sophomores come to us with low (or no) grade point averages, lack of attendance, and often discipline issues. Through intensive relationship-building, above all, and with the help of an innovative program for social-emotional learning called 180 Degrees, students turn their academic lives around. We believe that the intervention we do academically changes personal lives, too. And not only the lives of our wonderful students, but the lives of their families and the future of families for our entire community.

WHY WE ARE RAISING FUNDS

The prom bids for most comprehensive high schools range between $200-$400, making prom affordable only to a select few. We try to keep our costs low, so ALL our kids can afford to attend. Prom is a rite of passage, and we don't believe that it should just be for the wealthy. Most of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Their parents work multiple jobs to help the family survive in this expensive valley.

So everyone at school helps. Staff members donate their time and money to make fundraisers and promotional activities successful. Students have been raising funds since last May -- selling hot chocolate, chips, nachos, popcorn, balloons, and flowers. We have made around $2000 so far but need at least $4000 more to subsidize the cost for our students. We'll use the funds to pay for the site and the DJ.

Our prom is scheduled for April 13, 2019 at The Biltmore Hotel in Santa Clara.
