Our son Caleb Logan was admitted to Lady Cilento after progressively getting sicker over the course of 6 days.

We visited our GP on Thursday where he was diagnosed with a viral infection with a sore throat. If he didn’t improve our GP said to bring him back which we did the following day on Friday. We then took him to Redcliffe Hospital as he was running a temp & a cough had started. The Redcliffe ER said he had a viral infection & decided not to give him an xray as they didnt want to expose him to radiation if it wasnt necessary & sent us home. Saturday Caleb continued to decline & was coughing a lot more & was not eating. We took him back Sunday morning to Redcliffe ER again. Caleb was now lethargic & sleeping alot as he didnt have any energy. He was vomiting up flem as he couldnt bring it up any other way & still complaining about his really sore throat & sore chest. He was diagnosed still with a viral infection but a second opinion said it may be stepthroat so caleb was given antibiotics to take & sent home. Monday Caleb started getting diarrhoea. Still had temperatures & his breathing was short & rapid even when sleeping. We had a night doctor come out & he told us he just had a stomach bug. Caleb continued to get worse overnight so we took him back to our GP on Tuesday morning & he was shocked that he wasn’t in hospital & told us to take him straight to Prince Charles. The triage nurse took one look at him & he was rushed to resus & put on oxygen.

Caleb was diagnosed with double pneumonia. Caleb was transferred to Lady Cilento due to the severity of his condition. He was then put in an induced coma & put on a breathing machine because he couldn't breath on his own. We later were told Tuesday night that Caleb was very sick & had sepsis & that we had to prepare ourselves that he may die.

Over the course of days that followed Caleb was diagnosed with Influenza B & a secondary bacterial infection of Staph Aureus which was causing his high temps. Caleb also contracted two stomach infections. Caleb had a blood transfusion & an operation procedure to put a drain in his chest cavity to drain fluid.

Caleb spent a total of 17 days in ICU and a total of 6 weeks in hospital. The medical staff were amazing. We cant thank them enough. If it wasnt for our perseverance Caleb would not be with us today. We also learnt about Ryans Rule. Parents know there child best. So if you know something is wrong with your child keep persisting.

Over the course of 8 weeks through this process my wife & I exhausted all our sick & annual leave to be by Caleb's bed side. We have incurred medical expenses & weeks without income. We would really love to take Caleb on a camping holiday. Caleb still needs rehabilitation.
