Greetings,
I have been blessed with many opportunities and lifelong friendships during my tenure at Howard University. This journey has been life-altering in many ways. I’ve gained knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. Howard University, the Mecca of Black Excellence, taught me the power of self-love by affirming my identity as a God-fearing, intelligent, thought-provoking African-American man—and nothing less.
After a 2-year hiatus from Howard, I’ve returned to school—a decision that I definitely do not take for granted. I have currently completed all but 12 credits towards a completed engineering degree. With the right support, I can complete my degree this academic school year and graduate in May. I have been able to raise the money to pay off my Fall semester balance. However, I still need to raise $6,000 by April in order to graduate.
My goal is to become an electrical engineer with a heart for rebuilding unprivileged communities. I want to promote guided incubation to better make links between the technology world and the real world in an effort to advance our society. I recently joined the DC Government to learn more about the process of treating local Washingtonians and providing comprehensive health care through the Department of Health Care Finance.
This opportunity has surrounded me with positive agents for change with the technical knowledge and community experience that can give me a model of how to be a servant-leader that is thoughtful and inspiring to others. Despite my efforts to pay for school on my own, I had to leave Howard in the 5th year of my engineering program. In addition to not being able to raise the funds to stay in school, my family back in Austin, Texas was suffering.
My single mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and my sister joined the Army reserve—making her the 3rd sibling to join the service. In 2015, I decided that it was in my family’s best interest for me to be home to help them transition. This was a very difficult pill to swallow, as many of my close friends were moving on with their lives, attending graduate school, and taking exciting new jobs. Yet and still, I refused to be defeated.
I firmly believe that all things work together for the greater good and according to God’s plan. While in Austin, I worked as Principal’s Assistant at my alma mater, Texas Empowerment Academy, helping teach at the elementary level and support operations. Following that year, I worked overnight as a Concierge at a Private Condominium in Downtown Austin before making a brave move to rejoin my Bison Family in DC.
If you can offer support in any way, both my family and I would be very grateful. Any amount is helpful and would be used to help me close this chapter in my life and assist me in my commitment to building healthy communities. When I left Austin in 2010 to begin my journey at Howard University, I wrote a letter to the institution noting my great desire to advance my family and to be a force for good.
However, I couldn’t fathom how big my family would grow when joining the Bison. I currently stand planted in my studies, praying with hope and pride, awaiting the day my immediate family can join my Bison Family at graduation. If you are reading this letter, I would like to let you know how grateful I am for your time and any efforts to share my story with others for support.
