King David's Journey

Donation protected
David Louis Mahfouz is the son of Louis Mahfouz and Jessica Demet of Youngsville, Louisiana. Louis and Jessica have three precious babies, Gracie, Dylan, and David. David was born on December 20, 2013 with a very unique and complex set of birth defects known as OEIS linked with Spina bifida. He also has a twin brother, Dylan, who was born very healthy and with nothing wrong.

OEIS is Omphalocele-exstrophy-imperforate anus-spinal, which is a combination of birth defects including defects on the spine, which is why David was diagnosed with Spina bifida. It is the entire set of extrophies and complications with internal organs associated with Spina bifida.

Along with OEIS and Spina bifida, David had an array of birth defects. These included: Abdominal wall defect with exstrophy of bladder, bifid penis, imperforate anus, tethered cord with lumbar myeloeningocele. To help everyone understand this means that David was born with his bladder located on the outside of his body and his penis located inside out, but also cut in half. He was also born without a rectum, which is why he still has his colostomy bag. The OEIS complex is associated with spina bifida, but luckily David’s case is not as severe, therefore he has the ability to move his legs freely.

David had his first major medical procedure on May 8, 2014 at the Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. This surgery lasted for more than 17 hours and included multiple surgeries. He had his urinary tract surgically repaired and completed. This surgery involved fusing his bladder halves together, which were on the exterior of his body from birth, fashioning a urethra from body tissue. They also repaired his penis that was in two halves from birth. His pubic bones were cut and fused closed into the natural shape to help with future development and bring the tissues together for the urinary tract. He also had a revision of his stoma (external location of bowel) on his belly to all for better output of stool. All of the surgeries were successful with one major problem that arose after surgery. His kidneys shutdown and he became bloated and on the edge of death. Three days later, after days of intensive prayers from family and friends back home, his kidneys miraculously started functioning correctly! Thank you Jesus!

This surgery was only the first of many! Our baby David has many years ahead of him waiting and fighting through all of these surgeries. Throughout this entire journey thus far, his father, Louis was fired abruptly from his job for taking too much time off to be in New Orleans to care for his baby boy. In addition, he was lucky enough to be hired with a different company in Lafayette, but recently hurt his back and was fired on the spot. Along with this, Jessica is a specialist in the Louisiana National Guard where she works in supply/logistics. She also works at Super One foods where she has been for 6 years now. She will be going back to school in the fall. David’s parents only want to have the best care for him, but medical bills are starting to pile up and this is only the beginning. We ask as a community to please donate any amount you can. Every little bit helps!
