Spirit of Bertie for Mayo/Roscommon Hospice

Mayo Roscommon Hospice provides a specialist palliative care service to patients and families living with life limiting illness in the counties of Mayo and Roscommon.
Their mission is to care and support patients while meeting both the physical and emotional needs of patients and their loved ones. This vital service enables patients to live life to the full in comfort and dignity by improving their quality of life through pain control and alleviating other distressing symptoms.
Dr Bertie Farrell
A Roscommon native, who later became a Westport man, Dr. Bertie Farrell was a family GP in Westport where he was hugely respected by his community and patients alike. In 1992 Dr Farrell, together with a small group of like-minded people, set up the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation to provide a hospice care service, in association with the Western Health Board.
It was no easy task at the time and took a lot of time and effort to turn this idea into a reality but today the hospice provides a free service that has already helped thousands of families at the worst time in their lives.
In honour of Dr Farrell, this November his children and grandchildren will take part in this years Sea to Summit race to raise funds for the hospice. Sea to Summit is a challenging adventure race that incorporates running, cycling and hiking. Part of which, fittingly takes in sections of Murrisk, the peaceful and picturesque resting place of of the late Dr Bertie Farrell.
