Helping a Veteran in need

My best friend for the past 5 years is in a really dark place right now.  He's a veteran who is struggling, not just with bills but also with depression. He has a job but its not always enough. He's also had bad luck with cars and has to walk to and from his job each day. He sold all of his furniture to pay bills and is currently sleeping on an air mattress. His closest friends and I are trying to help him out this holiday season but any extra support would be greatly appreciated. I  know its easier to ignore helping people in need but anything helps especially around the holidays. He was in the hospital for mental health reason a few days ago and is really struggling. Im doing this as a present for christmas so if you know him personally please dont say anything. Im just trying to help someone who has been such a great friend to me and others around him.
