Theater Brings Stories to Life

Tax deductible
Granite State Arts Academy nurtures creative thinkers, active citizens, and independent learners with a curriculum that integrates the arts and academics. Granite State seeks $10,000 to finish our auditorium, equipping our stage and risers with lights, flame-retardant light-block black curtains, and audience seating.

Due to plans for demonstrations, visiting artists, and performances, Granite State would like to raise the funds by November 30th, 2014. Just in time for the holidays!! Get in the spirit early!

The auditorium is the heart of the school. It's where students learn, showcase their knowledge and abilities, and get together to forge a stronger sense of community. Many of our students come to Granite State intending to pursue the arts after high school, so providing them with access to these tools and equipment now sets these students up for success in future endeavors.

Ours is a high school dedicated to the arts. Our curriculum appeals to a broad cross section of students who are looking to discover the joy and transformational power of the arts and those interested in pursuing the arts in a professional setting. Our academic courses strive to instill a sincere lifelong desire to learn.

Students explore real world problems, simultaneously developing cross-curriculum skills while working in small collaborative groups. During their time at Granite State students attend art classes each day and study at least two of the following studies: Dance, Music, Theater, and Visual Arts. This allows for personalized learning, creating conditions where students’ talents can flourish. This positive approach to educating empowers students to dream and create everyday.

Granite State's approach to theatre is a serious actor's training program, similar to a conservatory style program with a focus on classical and contemporary plays and musicals. Granite State's focus is on acting technique and the creative process, performance, as well as attention to the technical/business end of theatre production.

At least three major theatre productions will occur each school year: a demonstration in November, a play in the January/February, and a musical in May. Students will gain great exposure to the whole spectrum of acting.

But not only the theater department will use the stage. Musicians may hold recitals there. Assemblies will occur in the auditorium. Visiting artists will perform on the stage. Granite State also intends to use the performances as fundraising opportunities.

Public charter schools operate on about one-third to one-half the funding of public school districts. Charter schools are funded based on enrollment, but do not receive the full amount allocated per pupil by the state. Instead, Granite State Arts Academy receives about 40-50% of that amount. That leaves a lot of room for our school, its families, and community partners to make up to provide the quality education that our students need, deserve, and crave.

The $10,000 is budgeted in the following way:
*$1,500 flame-retardant light-block fabric (to be fashioned into curtains to frame the stage and cover the windows).
*$5,000 for the lighting package, which includes: Fresnels and LEKOS lens, lights, and footlights; a cyclorama (sharkstooth backdrop); a small lighting board; and a small follow spot.
*$2,700 for padded seating.
*$800 for the purchase of two chair caddies.
