Hello.  We are the Stevens.  My husband an I have two children.  A 6 year-old little boy and an 11 month-old baby girl.  Recently, Jayce (our 11 month-old little girl), was diagnosed with both Severe Right Occipital Plagiocephaly & Hip Dysplasia (of the left hip).
It started in mid June when Jayce received an Orthotic Helmet that she will be wearing for 23 hours a day for 2-6 months.  The Orthotic Helmet was laser-fitted and hand made in Florida to form to her head.  Hopefully the helmet will help reshape her head so she will not have to have it surgically corrected.  The orthotic helmet costs a few thousand dollars, plus the cost of gas and the office visits to mold the helmet every 4 weeks.
Then, just a few days ago on July 21st, we headed out to spend the night in Boston to be there for her surgery at Boston's Childtren's Hospital early the next morning.  Jayce had surgery for her Hip Dysplasia first thing Tuesday morning July 22nd, where the surgeon opened up her hip, cut a muscle to loosen the tension, removed fat that grew around the hip joint, and repositioned her hip so it will heal properly.  Jayce is now in a SPICA 3/4 body cast.  The cast starts at her armpits, has a hole at her belly for when she eats, an opening for her to go to the bathroom, and the left leg is casted all the way to her ankle, and the right leg is casted down to her knee.  She is casted in a sitting spread-Eagle position and she has about a 20 inch spread from foot-to-foot.  She will be in this cast for at least 12 weeks.  The SPICA cast requires a special Hippo car seat that the hospital usually rents out, but in our case, they were out of stock and could not get us one.  When we were made aware of this at the lst minute, we went online to purchase her car seat, and were in shock that we had to spend $450.00 on it.  Only one company makes it, so there was no "shopping around".  She cannot use any of her seats at home due to her cast, so we have to purchase a new special Hippo stroller that costs $219.00 as well.  We have started to fabricate some sort of chair for her to sit in around the house, but there really isn't much out there for this sort of cast, so we're just "wingin' it".
We have to go to boston every 2-4 weeks for appointments and cast-changes for the next 3 months.  The surgery alone costs a lot of money, then you add the gas, office visits, cast changes, car seat, stroller, medications, and the special needs for her diaper changes, and it is very overwhelming.  We have insurance, but they do not cover all of these costs.
We are so thankful Jayce is going to be okay, and that we have our family & friends.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated during this time.
