Aaron Boardman Has a Good Heart, but It Needed Some Work

Back in September, Aaron began experiencing weakness and shortness of breath. He attributed it to aging and wanted to ignore the signs that eventually were diagnosed as heart failure due to a malfunctioning mitral valve. After a TEE (trans-esophageal echocardiogram) showed that his mitral valve needed to be either repaired or replaced, and his condition was too dire to allow him to return home, he was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday, March 1. The following weeks, much like a game of Whack-a-Mole, consisted of trying to correct one thing and then having another pop up, necessitating yet another delay until he was stable enough to undergo the open-heart surgery that would save his life. On April 4, he was finally released from the hospital.

Until that Tuesday in March, Aaron’s typical day involved leaving for work at 4:30 in the morning and driving to Valley Services where he is the kitchen supervisor. Valley is the company that provides the meals for the Fort Worth Meals on Wheels program. Aaron, a trained chef, has cooked in high end restaurants, managed deli departments, and catered many private events, but this job suits his personality best. It allows him to give of himself to others through his work as he has always done in his personal life.

Aaron and his mother share a modest home and its expenses in southwest Fort Worth. A widow for the past two years, she still works part-time to supplement her Social Security income. Aaron’s income along with hers allows them to make the house payments and cover their other individual expenses.

Throughout this hospital stay and his convalescence which will take several months’ time, Aaron will be unable to work. His stay in the hospital used all his sick leave. Consequently, while he is recovering, he will not receive a paycheck. His savings may cover some monthly expenses, but will, sooner rather than later, be depleted.  Even though he is covered by medical insurance, the bills for which he is responsible will be crushing... and that’s why he needs your help for which he and our entire family will be eternally grateful.

Aaron is devoted to his Jewish faith, and has always put tzedakah (charity) above his own desires and needs. Now he is the one who could use some help. With his generosity as a model, please consider making a donation to a man whom one of his friends referred to as, “…one of the most motivating and inspiring people I’ve ever met. He’s a true mensch–a man among men–and a tzadik–a righteous person...”
