Hello, my name is Ali and I'm about to enter my first year of college, I want to earn my teaching certificate and a Bachelorette degree in Elementary Education. I come from a middle class family that makes too much to receive enough scholarships and government support, but not enough to efficiently pay for college. I've been working hard to save up for college and to show my willingness to work for what I want and need, and to financially support myself. I've maintained a job since I was 16 years old, I worked two jobs through my Junior and Senior year, at Conk Kids Daycare and Papa Murphy's, and then returned to Conk Kids Daycare and another facility called Debbie's Daycare, all while maintaining a mid-3.0 GPA and attending community college (Senior year) and high school. In March of my Senior year I obtained a third job at Fred Meyer's. I graduated with honorable distinction chords and am still working at Fred Meyer's.
Why I Should Receive Donations
Communities: a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. That's how google has defined the word. What stands out in this to me, is the idea of fellowship and shared ideas. When I was younger I was supported by my community through adoption, through the support of the members around me. So in turn, I hope to give back to my community through my career. I've been striving to work towards my degree in teaching since I was a freshman in high school, hoping that one day I could be a teacher and make a positive impact on my students the way the community did for me. In order to achieve this dream I have to be able to afford college without drowning in debt. I feel that I should receive donation to achieve my goal in order to better my community and the institution of education through innovative lesson plans and fresh classroom experiences I hope to offer to children.
Past Experiences
I've always strived to involve myself in programs and experiences that would better myself for my future. As stated previously, I worked for two licensed daycares during the remaining two years of school. I began my journey with taking the offered courses at my high school to learn about early childhood education, I also began interning at Conk Kids Daycare since my freshman year of high school, before I was hired my Junior year. I spent a school year volunteering as a Sunday School teacher to preschool and kindergarten students.
During the summer after my Junior I spent several weeks in a program hosted by Washington’s Fellowship of Reconciliation. I was interviewed and admitted into the Peace Activist Trainee program. They taught us more in depth about social justice and how to react to the flaws in today’s society. More importantly, we were involved in the community and created projects and participated in activism in the Seattle community. We constructed a march from Garfield High School, the local high school that hosted a large number of at risk youth, all the way to the local King County Juvenile Detention center. We marched with signs and chants, alongside community members, to bring awareness to the issue of the “School to Prison Pipeline”. We also hosted a flash mob with a large banner we constructed in order to spread word of the march and the School to Prison Pipeline, we gathered in random places in a public shopping area and began yelling statistics about the unfortunate happening. We preached for education and not incarceration.
