Hello, my name is Sherine, I am a qualified integrative therapist based in Suffolk, England. During my training, I tried to access personal therapy with someone who looked similar to me, and who understands me and my culture/heritage without me having to explain all this to them. It was challenging because most therapists would only see clients face-to-face and I couldn't find anyone like that in my local area. I didn't have the time or the financial resources to travel far so it took me a bit longer to access the ideal therapist for me.

Then I did some research to see how many ethnic minority counsellors and Psychotherapists are practicing in the UK, the British association of counselling and psychotherapy has over fifty thousand registered members. However, statistics show ethnic minority individuals make up only 9.6% of qualified clinical psychologists in England and Wales, in contrast to 14% of the population

Also during my training, I became aware that as one of two ethnic minorities in my cohort, there is a very small percentage that is trainee practitioners, and then I thought about how difficult must be for clients to access help and support from a multicultural counsellor, especially if they are living in rural areas of the UK. This is one of the main reasons I currently work as a psychotherapist in private practice, but I need the help and support of my community to enable me to continue offering my service at concessional rates for clients who have experienced intergenerational trauma, relational issues, post-traumatic stress, and sexual abuse.

I currently have a website subscription but my aim is to create a more permanent website. The funds you donated will be used to create the official Inklusiewe counseling website where clients can access multiple resources which will include:
  • Interventions to help you manage your mental health leading to a healthier mind and/or lifestyle.
  • How you can support your local community
  • The importance of donating blood (we currently have a national shortage for ethnic minorities).
  • The importance and benefits of being amongst nature to help improve your physical and mental health.
  • Easy access to appointment bookings, wellness assessments, face-to-face, and telephone counselling, and concession rates.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and thank you in advance for your generous donation.
