Help Us Beat Lyme Disease!

The beautiful woman in the pictures above is my best friend, Summer.  We often say we were sisters in a previous life and I love her as if she really were my sister.  Six years ago, Summer became extremely ill when she was pregnant with her daughter.  Her symptoms included extreme fatigue; sudden, extreme weight loss; bowel dysmotility; hair loss; abdominal pain; joint pain and decreased mental clarity and focus.  At first, she and her doctors attributed the symptoms to her pregnancy.  Summer vowed to do everything she could to bring her baby into the world as healthy as possible, which she did.  After her daughter was born however, Summer's symptoms continued to worsen and her health continued to decline.  Some days, picking up her daughter to feed or change her seemed like an extreme workout.  She began to seek the help of medical professionals, starting with her own primary care physician, and was told it was "normal" for her to experience fatigue as a new mother and that perhaps she was having some post partum depression as well.  Doctor after doctor told her that her symptoms were not real as her health continued to decline.  Desperate to get well and be the best mother she could to her daughter, she sought help from renowned physicians at the Mayo Clinic, Stanford, UCSF and other well-known medical facilities.  After six long years, several mis-diagnoses and unnecessary surgeries, she finally got a diagnosis.  Summer has advanced, chronic Lyme Disease.

Most times, with a diagnosis, there is a plan of care soon to follow.  With Lyme Disease however, time is your enemy and if it is not treated quickly, many symptoms become chronic and can lead to neurological damage and damage to the heart, which is the case for Summer.  At 5'9" tall and 114 lbs. she is no longer absorbing nutrients from her food, has difficulty fighting off other illnesses and infections due to an extremely low white blood cell count and she is sicker than ever.  In addition, because Summer most likely contracted the disease sometime during her pregnancy, her six year old daughter began showing symptoms of the disease and was diagnosed as well, having contracted it in utero.

New treatments have been discovered and are proving to be promising for others with advanced Lyme disease.  Unfortunately, they are expensive, not covered by most insurance, and Summer's family has depleted all of their savings just trying to get a diagnosis.    Summer is currently unable to work and now her family is faced with a mountain of medical bills. If she and her daughter are to receive any further treatment, there are more bills to come.  These treatments are their only hope and they currently have no way to pay for them.

Summer is one of the kindest, most loving, and giving individuals I have ever known and is a blessing in the lives of all who have the good fortune to meet her. I have created this page to help fund treatment for her and the daughter that she loves more than life itsself.  I also want to raise awareness about this debilitating disease to help others who may be facing this diagnosis or are still trying to get a proper diagnosis.
