Second Chance for Jazzy

Jazzy is an 11 year old female chi mix who weighs about 15 lbs. She was found as a stray in San Jose and turned in to the local shelter. She was scheduled to be spayed to get her ready for adoption. However, she had breathing issues, so the vets at the SJ shelter could not proceed with the anesthesia to do the spay. Instead, she was deemed unadoptable and therefore put on the euthanasia list. Luckily for Jazzy, one of Rescue the Underdog’s volunteers saved her, took her to the vet for an evaluation, and placed her under our care.
The vet took X-rays of Jazzy’s chest and determined that she had several conditions:
- a hernia, for which she will need surgery
- chronic bronchitis, for which she will need to be on long-term medication
- a suspected UTI, for which she was prescribed antibiotics
- bad hips, for which she was prescribed pain medication
After a few weeks in our care, Jazzy was ready to go back to the vet to be spayed, have her hernia repaired, and get some much-needed dental work. Unfortunately, the vet found that Jazzy had an enlarged liver and an infection. She was placed on IV fluids and kept under observation, then sent home with antibiotics and a liver medication.
We will continue to get Jazzy healthy, so that she can have her surgery and dental work. In spite of all the she has been through, she is a very sweet little girl who is affectionate, walks well on a leash, and is house trained (she has had a few marking incidents in a new home due to other dogs being present). She likes to sleep with her person at night. She has been in foster homes with multiple other dogs and gotten along with them. She was in a foster home with cats and tended to chase them. Don’t let her age and health conditions fool you, Jazzy still has a lot of spunk in her!
Jazzy is an example of why Rescue the Underdog exists. At the shelter, she would have been put down because of her health complications. In rescue, we are getting her the help she needs so that she can have a second chance at life and be happy and healthy. Currently, her medical bills are accumulating, and she still needs spaying, dental surgery, hernia repair, and possibly will be on long term treatment for bronchitis.
