Guala - Hands in Action

Donation protected
Hello World!

My name is Melvin Cruz. I'm an exchange student from Honduras spending the spring 2016 semester at the University of Minnesota CSE (College of Science and Engineering) in a scholarship program called World Learning, granted through the US Embassy. I'm majoring in Electrical Engineering, with a focus on renewable energies and 3D printing.

I'm raising money to start a partnership in my home country with e-nable community (enablingthefuture.org), which is an amazing group of individuals from all over the world who are using their 3D printers to create free 3D-printed hands and arms for people in need of an upper limb assistive device. These funds will be used to buy the first 3D printer for my project and to start printing prosthetic hands for kids in need—totally free! Many children in Honduras are born with these deformities and never get to know what a normal life is like.

I see this project as a future nonprofit, which companies and individual donors can support by underwriting the cost of each hand we provide. In this way, the organization can become sustainable as its capacity grows.

The first step is to buy the 3D printer and begin creating profiles of each candidate. From there, we will begin seeking the funds that will pay to print and install these prosthetic hands and limbs.

Our project will not only provide immediate help to the kids who need it most. More than that, we plan to teach them to design and print their own hand, training them in the process to lend a helping hand to someone else. Honduras is in great need of development, especially in the fields of education and technology. This project will address an urgent need while providing the information and skills that are so desperately needed to build a healthier, stronger country.

My fundraising deadline is February 22, 2016, so I can purchase the 3D-printer through the University at a discounted price.

Please join me by supporting this project. No disability should deprive a child from accomplishing the simple, everyday tasks the rest of us take for granted. We all deserve to aspire and work for our dreams. You can provide a Helping Hand!
