A Crisis in Our City

Less than two-thirds of children in New York City graduate high school on time. Among those who graduate, less than a quarter are college-ready. And when you consider Latino and African American students, it is only 11% who are college ready. The problem takes root before Middle and High School. A growing body of evidence indicates that third grade is profoundly a make-or- break year. If a child is on grade level by third grade, that child is predicted to navigate a path of success. But if a child is not, the child can fall behind indefinitely. In New York City today, among children of color, fewer than 20% are on grade level by third grade. This is a status quo that must be challenged.

The LEAD Program and Our Mission

Our goal is to address this problem head-on by providing excellent afterschool educational services. We aim to help academically struggling kids get back on track. The work we do is unique in the afterschool space. Our goal is to scale our afterschool model into multiple sites throughout the city. Students, especially those who are falling behind, ought to be building upon their academic foundation during the hours after school.
