Jackie's Fight Against Cancer

This past March Jacquelyn (Jackie) was diagnosed with Duodenum Cancer. It all started by her going to her doctor complaining about acid indigestion. That led to more tests in which they found a tumor on her small intestine and then to a surgery procedure called “the Whipple Procedure”. Since March, her life has been about her 14 hour surgery, her treatment which is 12 rounds of chemo, (She has eight more rounds of chemo left), and her family. Once the rounds are completed, she will start daily radiation 5 days a week for 10 weeks. Her doctor said that her prognosis is very good.
Her challenge is two fold. First is that in spite of having health insurance, she has found that it is not covering the some of her medical expenses. The second challenge is that her car, a 2001 Ford Windstar Van with over 136000 miles is on its last leg. Her chemo treatments are in Boston, a 40-mile trip each way and she has to rely on family and friends to take her to her treatments. Last week, with the help of a Master Mechanic friend (thank you Scott), who was able to get the van back on the road after five hour-long repair job, is in dire need of replacement. All this repair work might be short lived since it is need of a lot more work. Jackie is a young mother of 3 children who keep her and her husband very busy.
Our goal is to help her raise enough money to help cover some of the medical expenses and to help cover a down payment for a more reliable car, which will hopefully allow her and her husband to bear some of the impact of these new burdens especially now since her doctors are requesting that she stop working for the remainder of her treatments. This will obviously put extreme burden on their financial situation.
Hopefully no one has to go through the agony of cancer but for anyone who has experienced or has a loved one who has been treated with chemotherapy and radiation, it is a grueling experience and takes every once of your energy and strength away from you. We share her treatment experience, as a family and as friends, and go with her on some of her treatments and have seen first hand what chemo does to the body and it is not nice. Jackie goes every two weeks and is usually sick for several days after her treatment. This makes it all the more difficult for her to maintain her job as day care provider in an effort to make a keep up with these new expenses and constant repairs on her van.
Jackie is doing well and keeping a positive attitude and as soon as she is done with her chemo treatments will have a grand party, most likely involving sushi since that is one of her favorite foods.
