Volunteer Nursing & Dental-Cambodia 2014

Donation protected
In October we will be wrapping up our graduation trip in SE Asia by spending one month in the city of Siem Reap in Cambodia volunteering with an organization called New Hope Cambodia. New Hope runs a local medical clinic, a school for children, and a community center, which helps support the local indigent people of the area. Many regions in Cambodia are still recovering from the atrocities that occurred during Khmer Rouge genocide of the 1970's. During this time, 4 million people were killed due to war and famine, while 2.5 million people were outright executed or murdered by the Khmer Rouge regime.

Jordan, who has recently graduated as a Dental Hygienist will be using her skills to assist in the provision of dental services to the children in the New Hope school as well as many members of the surrounding community. Myself, being a nurse, will be working in the medical clinic during the first half of my days and then traveling into the countryside to visit people in their homes who are unable to travel into town to obtain medical services.

We are attempting to raise funds to to cover the cost of this volunteer venture. For the sake of transparency, the following is the breakdown of how any funds raised will be allocated: we will each need to pay a $500 flat rate volunteer fee (which is pennies compared to other organizations, which charge outrageous prices for “feel good” volunteer experiences). In addition, $500 is all that is needed to cover the cost of living, eating, transportation, and lodging in Cambodia during our volunteer placements. This breaks down to $1000 for each of us, or $2000 in total.

Recently, Jordan has been asked by New Hope Cambodia to set up and execute an actual dental hygiene clinic during her time at the center. Since it has been extremely difficult to access the supplies needed for such a clinic here in Cambodia, she is having her own clinical dental instruments shipped over from the United States. Jordan has also campaigned with local dentists in our home community to collect dental supplies and tooth brushes to give to the children who come to her clinic. This will give the children the tools needed to practice their own dental hygiene after they leave her clinic.

Unfortunately, shipping these supplies is rather expensive and we have had to use some of the donations already fundraised to cover the cost. For this reason we have increased our fundraising goal to $3000, so as to help us cover this unexpected expense, while still being able to pay for our original projected volunteering costs.

We are extremely appreciative of anything that you can do to help us fund this volunteerism; we are grateful for your help in facilitating the use of our nursing and dental skills for people who ACTUALLY are in dire need.

With the utmost sincerity, thank you!
