Everest Base Camp for Mike

"It's not about how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward."

Hi! My name is Victoria Morley, and I am a university student from Collingwood, Ontario who recently graduated from StFX University in Nova Scotia. This fundraising campaign is in memory of my hero, my strongest fighter, my champion and most importantly, my big brother Michael. Michael was an avid athlete and sports fan. He enjoyed tennis, hockey, soccer and especially boxing. Michael was an Ontario Champion boxer and represented Ontario at the Canadian Nationals in both 2005 and 2006. Michael had an incredible sense of humour, and brought copious amounts of sunshine and laughter into the lives of those around him.

Michael was a fighter both inside and outside of the ring. In 2009, Michael and I lost our mom Bo to cancer after an incredibly long and courageous battle. My fondest and most vivid memories of Michael include the times he picked me up when I was down and always pushed me to keep going. He told me that, if I wanted to be the best, I had to play with the best, and as such reminded me to make our mom proud in everything that I do and never believe that any feat is too large to accomplish. I attribute much of what I have accomplished thus far in my life to him and his impact.

On Christmas Day 2018, my family unexpectedly learned that Michael had lost his long battle with addiction. The last nearly three years without him has been filled with significant amounts of pain and emptiness. There are many days that I struggle to get up and keep going, because it seems wrong to live in a world without Michael in it.

On the date this campaign launched, Michael did not get to make it to celebrate his 30th birthday. As I considered ways to honour this occasion, it seemed only fitting to follow his advice and accomplish something I never imagined. To this end, I will be trekking to Mt Everest Base Camp (EBC) in Nepal, May 2021 [UPDATE: Due to COVID-19 reschedule to December 2021]. As I go through training and complete this adventure, I will be bringing a flag to EBC for Michael, and will try to leave a little piece of his spirit across the world in the people that I meet along the journey.

Over the course of  training throughout the next several months, I will be fundraising to support an organization that will carry out Michael’s legacy. 100% of the profits of this campaign will go to the Seasons Centre for Grieving Children. Since December 1995, the Seasons Centre has been providing peer to peer support groups for children/teens and their families grieving the death, or life-threatening illness of an immediate family member. My hope is that these funds will support more children rise out of grief adversity and that Michael’s spirit will live on in all hearts of children touched by this organization.

If you are unable to financially support this campaign, I would equally appreciate the sharing of Michael’s story to raise awareness on addiction struggles and grief support for children.

Michael, losing you hit the hardest, but I promise to keep moving forward and carry on your legacy. Forever and always, proud to be your little sister. Happy 30th Birthday Xo
