Saw an awesome example of true work ethic today! Driving to work this morning I pass a young man (Mike) walking down Hwy 42 just west of Paisley, headed towards Umatilla. He was wearing black dress pants, a black shirt, and a gray tie. Looked like he had a name tag on. Appeared to be walking to work. The only thing weird with that is the nearest possible business he could be headed to is a good 4 to 5 miles away!
I made a u-turn, rolled my window down and asked him if he was walking to work. He said yes. I asked where he worked. He says, "Burger King, in Eustis." Well, my jaw about hit the floor of my truck! That is 8.4 miles away from where we were! I said: "Are you serious?" I see by his Burger King name badge he is not lying. He says:"Yeah. I have no choice. Gotta get to work."
Wel, I tell him I'll drive him to work. He thanks me and hops in.
For the next 10 minutes I am introduced to Mike. Mike moved here with his wife who has epilepsy and can't work, to move in with his sister so he could help her out. Some days Mike drives his sister's car. Some days he can't so he walks. He's tried the bus. Too inconsistent. Uber, but too expensive. So, he walks. Sometimes there in the morning, and back home later..
Mike is a polite man. Seems to have dreams. Wants to open his own cell phone repair business. Just needs a little training, but sees the demand.
We talk about work ethic, and he says it's not hard. If someone is paying you to perform, you should be thankful and be committed to your position. He is obviously committed! He started walking 5 hours before his shift, which started at noon!
Mike impressed the heck out of me today. I wish I had the funds to get Mike a car. But, I think I am going to get Mike a bicycle.
