Words from his wife, Camas:
On June 21st Doug Brandt sustained a very nasty burn to his right lower leg. The healing has been slow and painful, and while he was seen by a Doctor early on, the wound was misdiagnosed and wrongly prescribed for. Over the course of the past weeks Doug started getting very sick and finally was convinced to seek emergency care Saturday evening July 5. By the time we arrived he was on the brink of septic shock. His blood pressure was non existent and his organs were shutting down. Two days later Doug was stable, but still entrenched with an intensely stubborn infection, his body was fighting hard and his Kidneys had taken a blow. After several surgeries and rounds of antibiotics with very little improvement, this is where we are July 20, this is how it's done. At this point we don't know how many surgeries he has in front of him. And like I said..in a strange way, we are making peace, this is our new normal. The fog is clearing, our medical team is looking ahead and we know what phase four will most likely be, but we are still learning about what phases five, six, and seven will look like. As I'm sure you can imagine, Doug has a lot of reconstruction and rehabilitation ahead of him.
What we are holding on to is an image that a year from now he will be alive and well and home and walking on his own leg, and all of this incredibly hard and painful and slow and sad work will have been worth it. What I also believe is that this is one of those tests in life that ultimately will make our lives better. Literally and figuratively this will be the shedding of 'skin'. It only makes the time we have left all that more precious.
Thank you all so so much for your vigilant watch and prayers. We can truly feel your energy and we are soaking it up like sunshine.
Most likely Doug will be back in surgery the first of next week. I promise to post an update as soon as we know anything. We love you all so much.

Doug and his family are very precious and important to all of us. SO many people have reached out wanting to know what they can do. By making a donation to his account, you will be helping to give this family the peace of mind and support needed to solely focus on recovery and healing. No donation is too small, everything helps. Please send it with your blessing for all good things will return to you. <3
