I am an 8th grade social studies teacher in Port Chester, NY. My students are all invested in their work and supported a home by parents who encourage the value of education as a means to a meaningful career and adult life.

We are a title IX school in a developing community, however, and the tax base is not as substantial as those of surrounding communities. Some of our facilities are outdated and, in my case, the desks and chairs in my classroom (first picture, below) are not optimized for a collaborative, student-centered environment, or establish a space that will inspire my students for college and career (my inspiration came during a recent visit to Boston College, second picture).

My kids want to talk, want to move, and want to work with each other during small group projects.  A classroom filled with the tables and chairs I hope to earn would both encourage these behaviors as well as give the students an increased sense of pride and ownership in their learning environment.

My goal is to create a flexible study center in my room - a room that can easily support independent work, small group work, debates and discussions, and mobile activities such as museum walks and gallery exhibits.  My request is for funding to purchase tables and chairs that establish this type of learning environment.

My budget is for 12, 72" tables and 36 chairs.  Priced through officefurniture.com, this works out to $7,572.
