The goal of this fund is to help support my dear friend Sara Woodruff while she undergoes aggressive treatments for stage four colon cancer.
Sara’s cancer journey began in early 2019. Sadly she suffered months of severe abdominal pain before getting a diagnosis. Initially physicians believed she was too young and healthy to be afflicted by diseases usually affecting those twice her age. As a result, it wasn’t until after multiple ER visits, hospitalization, and battery of testing that Sara was diagnosed with complex cysts causing enlargement of her ovaries and probable endometriosis to account for her pain.
This June, in hopes of having some pain relief Sara underwent what was supposed to be a straight forward less invasive laparoscopic surgical procedure. Unfortunately, what resulted was an open abdominal surgery to remove her appendix, one and a half ovaries, evaluate an undiagnosed large mass on her colon, and perform biopsies.
Sara woke up from anesthesia with life changing news, and advised she would need to seek expert consultation for a large tumor found on her colon. Days later biopsies were confirmed, and she was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. Instead of having time to recover from major abdominal surgery Sara was busy commuting four hours away from home to see oncology specialists at the Rogel Cancer Center at the University of Michigan Hospital. Within a month of surgery Sara needed a colonoscopy, PET scan to check for any metastasis beyond her ovaries, and have a port placed for an aggressive chemotherapy regimen.
With the support of family, friends, and good Samaritans Sara has a fighting chance at beating stage four colon cancer! Her oncologists from two hospital systems are collaborating to help keep life as “normal” as possible.
