BUTCH is a lesbian comedy short film produced by ONYX Films LLC, a female-led production company with the goal of introducing more stories about women to the film industry. BUTCH is part of ONYX's upcoming anthology series, BASED ON HER TRUE STORY, which is dedicated to the personal, real-life stories of our diverse team of filmmakers. BUTCH centers around the complicated — and sometimes hilarious — realities of being a Brown butch lesbian.
Our film needs funds for production design, costuming, and, of course, feeding our amazing crew! BUTCH will be shot on April 2nd-3rd, so our deadline is rapidly approaching, and we would be immensely grateful for your support in making this project a reality!
LOGLINE: When Alex's girlfriend Violet forces her, a butch lesbian, to go to a party wearing a feminine outfit, Alex meets a group of European boys who inspire her to reclaim her own gender expression and sexuality.
A NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTORS:
BUTCH was written based on an actual experience I had the summer after my freshman year of college. During this golden age that was probably the most chaotic, drunken time of my life, I met a group of attractive European boys who took me on extravagant trips across LA and partied with me all night long in their six-person dorm room. That summer was probably every straight girl's dream come true...to me, it was the most exciting friendship I'd ever had! Our film BUTCH explores this scandalous yet oddly wholesome experience I had, where not only did I discover how many beers it took for me to black out in one night, but also how uncomfortable I felt wearing dresses and make up like the blonde, white, sorority girls I was surrounded by at USC. Yes, that summer of European boy love was when I learned I had the power and freedom to look and do whatever I want. I've never seen someone who looked like me in person or in media, and that excites me. BUTCH encapsulates this pride I have for my unique identity as a Brown butch lesbian. — Brittany Franke
I founded ONYX in order to tell authentic stories about women, by women. My goal is to obliterate the one conventional type of woman that has history of existing in the media; the sexualized straight woman that doesn’t pass the Bechdel test. My short film that I wrote with my good friend and creative partner, Brittany Franke, does just that. BUTCH is about a woman struggling with conforming to what her girlfriend wants her to be, what society wants her to be, and what men see her as, and realizing that she doesn’t have to mold herself to anything. The beautiful thing about women is that every single one of them is different; in sexuality, gender identity, presentation, personality, attitude, and so much more! — Jordan Pfeifer
